Google’s New Feature Helps Users Navigate AI-Generated News
In a bid to enhance the user experience amidst the rise of artificial intelligence in news reporting, Google has introduced a feature called Preferred Sources. Launched in August 2025, this setting allows users to select trusted news outlets for their search results, aiming to combat inaccuracies prevalent in AI-generated content.
The integration of AI into Google Search has transformed how users access information, but it has also raised concerns about the accuracy of the data provided. Since the introduction of AI Overviews, a feature that summarizes search queries, users have encountered issues with misinformation. Reports have highlighted that AI, specifically Google’s AI model known as Gemini, struggles with accuracy, sometimes misinterpreting fundamental facts such as the current year.
As AI-generated content proliferates, the challenge of distinguishing reliable news from misleading information intensifies. A recent study by the European Broadcasting Union and the BBC revealed that AI models misrepresent news content at an alarming rate of up to 45%. This misrepresentation problem, often referred to as “hallucination,” underscores the limitations of current AI technology in understanding language nuances and reasoning.
Despite the drawbacks, the adoption of AI as a news source is growing rapidly, particularly in substantial markets like India, where usage has doubled by 2025, according to research from the Oxford University and the Reuters Institute. However, public sentiment is cautious. An investigation by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism across 47 countries found that many users remain uncomfortable with AI-generated news, especially in sensitive areas such as politics. Similarly, a study by Poynter indicated that nearly half of Americans prefer not to receive news from AI sources.
The introduction of the Preferred Sources feature seeks to empower users amid this uncertainty. To utilize this feature, users can type a query into Google Search and scroll down to the Top Stories section. By clicking the star icon next to the text, they can select their preferred news outlets. After confirming their choices, users will find that future search results are prioritized from these selected sources, thereby enhancing the potential for trustworthy information.
While some news organizations are incorporating AI into their practices ethically, transparency remains a significant issue. Many outlets do not disclose the extent of AI’s role in content creation, leaving readers to navigate the landscape of information independently.
As AI continues to shape the digital information environment, the onus is on users to discern credible sources. Google’s Preferred Sources feature serves as a valuable tool, allowing individuals to curate their news feeds according to their trust levels. With ongoing challenges in AI-generated content, this solution could play a crucial role in helping users find reliable information in an increasingly complex media landscape.
