Remembering Vincent R. Di Fiore: A Life of Service and Song

Vincent R. Di Fiore, a cherished educator and talented vocalist, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of service and love. Born in Flushing, New York, he was the second child of Vincent and Philomena Di Fiore. He spent his formative years in Corona and Kingston, New York, where he excelled in singing and athletics. In the summer before his junior year of high school, he and his family relocated to Santa Barbara, California.

Di Fiore pursued higher education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He was also commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army ROTC. He later obtained a Master’s degree from California State University, Long Beach. During his time at UCSB, he met his future wife, Paula Winkler, while preparing for a Sigma Pi fraternity event. Their love blossomed, leading to their marriage in August 1953, a partnership that lasted until Paula’s passing in December 2024.

Career and Community Involvement

Vincent Di Fiore enjoyed a distinguished career spanning over 30 years with the Torrance Unified School District. His roles included Counselor at Torrance High School, Vice Principal at West High School, Principal of Parkway Elementary, and Principal of Kurt T. Shery High School. His dedication to education profoundly impacted countless students and colleagues.

After retiring, Di Fiore continued to serve his community, spending eight years on the Rolling Hills Estates Planning Commission. He also showcased his musical talent with the Prime Time Players, taking on lead roles in various performances. Known for his beautiful singing voice, he shared this gift at family weddings, in the ensemble Los Cancioneros, and with the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir, remaining active in music until the end of his life.

A Life of Fulfillment and Family

Beyond his professional achievements, Vincent led a vibrant personal life. He frequently played tennis with friends, traveled extensively with his wife, and cherished time spent with family. He is remembered for his warmth and generosity, traits that endeared him to many.

Vincent is predeceased by his sister Beatrice and his beloved wife Paula. He is survived by his five children: Donna, Dean (Esther), Diane (Jerry Hester), Vincent, and Denise (Jon Shuman). He also leaves behind grandchildren Elise, Jeffrey (Claire), Michael, Vincent, Carlo, Luca, Max, and great-grandchild Nora.

A Celebration of Life for both Vincent and Paula will take place at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills Estates on Saturday, February 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception. The service will honor their enduring love and the impact they made on their community. Vincent R. Di Fiore will be deeply missed, remembered fondly by family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
