Rubin Observatory’s Alert System Launches with 800,000 Notifications
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has officially launched its automated alert system, generating a remarkable 800,000 alerts on its first night of operation. This event occurred on February 24, 2024, marking a significant milestone for astronomers eager to explore the cosmos. The system delivers notifications about various celestial phenomena, including asteroids, supernovas, and black holes, and is expected to increase its output to millions of alerts each night.
The observatory previously released its first images captured by the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) camera in June 2023. Each night, the LSST camera captures approximately 1,000 images, which are then compared to a reference image taken when the telescope first became operational.
