Astros Eye Cardinals’ Outfielders in Trade Talks for Paredes

The Houston Astros are navigating a challenging situation as they consider potential trades involving infielder Isaac Paredes. Despite being a prominent name in trade discussions throughout the offseason, the Astros have not found a satisfactory package to facilitate his departure. The current infield logjam leaves Paredes without a clear role, prompting calls for the team to take decisive action.

Baseball insider Ken Rosenthal recently highlighted the urgency for the Astros to resolve this issue, suggesting that a trade could benefit both the team and Paredes. In a column for The Athletic, Rosenthal proposed a three-team deal aimed at securing at least one star outfielder from the St. Louis Cardinals. He identified left-handed hitting outfielders Lars Nootbaar and Alec Burleson as potential targets for Houston.

Rosenthal noted that Paredes does not align with the Cardinals’ rebuilding strategy, indicating that the Astros must find a third team willing to engage in a trade involving the infielder. The prospect of trading with St. Louis comes at a time when the Boston Red Sox, previously seen as a logical match for Paredes, have reduced their urgency following their acquisition of Caleb Durbin.

While Burleson spent most of the 2025 season playing first base, he possesses the ability to play in the outfield, albeit with some defensive limitations. His offensive performance was noteworthy, featuring a slash line of .290/.343/.459, along with 18 home runs and 59 RBI. This level of production would enhance the Astros’ lineup, making him an appealing option.

In contrast, Nootbaar, recognized for his defensive skills, experienced a decline at the plate during the same season, finishing with a slash line of just .234/.325/.361. Despite this downturn, he managed to achieve a career high in runs batted in, highlighting his potential value. At this stage in their careers, Burleson may be the more advantageous fit for the Astros’ current needs.

The pressing concern remains the lack of available opportunities for Paredes within the Astros’ infield. Although his performance in 2025 was impactful, there are insufficient plate appearances to accommodate him. If Houston can successfully negotiate a deal bringing in an established outfielder like Nootbaar or Burleson, it would represent a significant achievement for General Manager Dana Brown.

As the Astros approach the 2026 season, the focus will be on whether they can finalize a trade involving both the Cardinals and a third team, positioning themselves for greater success in the upcoming year.
