The early weeks of the high school basketball season presented significant challenges for Ian Roberts, a junior guard for Beaverton High School. After battling various injuries and health issues, Roberts has returned to form, making a substantial impact on the court. As of now, he is averaging 22.6 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, helping the Beavers achieve a remarkable 9-1 record.

Roberts, standing at 6-foot-4, initially struggled to find his rhythm this season due to an elbow injury, illness, and a minor back issue. “He’s feeling good. He’s had a rough year so far,” said Shad Woodruff, head coach of the Beavers. “He’s getting close to 100 percent, and when he’s 100 percent, he’s tough.” These words reflect not only the coach’s confidence in Roberts but also highlight the player’s resilience.

Roberts Transitions to a More Versatile Game

Primarily known as a perimeter shooter early in his high school career, Roberts has focused on becoming a more well-rounded scorer this season. “My mindset was just taking a big step up from last year,” he explained. With the departure of Caiden Loar, a key ballhandler, Roberts recognized the need to elevate his game. He is now concentrating on scoring inside the paint and becoming a three-level scorer.

Last season, Roberts averaged 20.3 points and earned recognition as part of the Daily News Dream Team. This season’s numbers indicate his growth, as he continues to dominate on the court. Coach Woodruff noted, “It’s nice to have the size Ian has, to pass over people. That helps break the press, and it helps us get the ball inside to Landon Love.” Roberts’s versatility makes him a difficult matchup for opponents, as he can effectively score both inside and from the perimeter.

Roberts himself has been intentional about expanding his offensive game. “I think I’m getting better at getting into the paint and scoring inside, not just being a 3-point shooter,” he stated. His commitment to improvement is evident, as he works on his mid-range shot and aims to be stronger with the ball. When asked about his scoring preferences, he cheerfully remarked, “I like all of it. Scoring anywhere is fun.”

A Family Legacy of Basketball

Roberts comes from a family deeply rooted in basketball. His mother, Darcie Roberts, was a standout player in high school, went on to play at Alma College, and has served as an assistant coach at Northwood University. His father, Ryan Roberts, played basketball in high school as well. Meanwhile, his younger sister, Taryn Roberts, is making a name for herself as a talented freshman center on Beaverton’s varsity girls’ team.

Growing up in a basketball-centric environment, Ian has always had access to training facilities. “With my mom at Northwood, I always got to get into the gym, and with my dad as the principal at Beaverton, I always got to get into the gym there, too,” he shared. This exposure has allowed him to hone his skills and develop a strong work ethic. He enjoys friendly competitions with Taryn, stating, “We’re always going at it, trying to make each other better.”

Looking ahead, Roberts aspires to play basketball at the collegiate level, ideally in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He acknowledges the need for continued improvement, focusing on becoming stronger and enhancing his scoring ability. Outside of basketball, he enjoys spending time with friends, playing golf, and exploring history, although he has not yet determined a career path in that field.

Coach Woodruff is optimistic about Roberts’s leadership potential. “He’s getting there. Great kid. Everybody loves him. Everybody’s friends with him,” Woodruff said. He believes that while Roberts is already a leader on the team, he has the potential to take charge more during critical moments in games. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Roberts as he continues to develop and lead the Beavers to success.
