Detroit Lions Release Graham Glasgow, Offensive Line Faces Rebuild

The Detroit Lions have parted ways with veteran offensive lineman Graham Glasgow, marking a significant change in their offensive lineup. The Lions announced Glasgow’s release on March 2, 2026, a decision that frees up approximately $5.5 million in salary cap space as the team looks to revamp its offensive strategy.

Glasgow, who is 33 years old, has had a long tenure in the NFL, spending seven of his ten seasons with the Lions. Drafted in the third round from the University of Michigan in 2016, he played a versatile role on the offensive line, filling positions at center and both guard spots. After signing with the Denver Broncos in 2020, he returned to the Lions for the 2023 season.

In a heartfelt message posted on X, Glasgow expressed his gratitude to the Lions organization and the city of Detroit. He stated, “I’m grateful for the 7 years I’ve spent as a Detroit Lion. I’m thankful for the great teammates, coaches, and friends I had along the way. I love this city and the fans that have supported me for the better part of a decade.”

Glasgow’s performance last season included starting 14 games, primarily at right guard. However, his role evolved throughout the year. He shifted to left guard to accommodate Kevin Zeitler and later transitioned to center following the unexpected retirement of Frank Ragnow. Despite his contributions, Glasgow was benched for two crucial games late in the season, both of which resulted in losses, ultimately leading to the team’s absence from the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

The Lions’ offensive line now faces a critical rebuilding phase as they prepare for the upcoming season. They will be actively seeking a veteran center when the free-agent negotiating period opens on March 9. With swing tackle Dan Skipper announcing his retirement in January, the team is particularly focused on strengthening their offensive front.

Fellow lineman Taylor Decker, who was drafted alongside Glasgow in 2016, recently confirmed he will return for the 2026 season. The Lions are considering potential free-agent centers, including Tyler Linderbaum of the Baltimore Ravens and Connor McGovern of the Buffalo Bills. Additionally, there is a possibility of moving Tate Ratledge, a second-round pick from Georgia, to the center position. Ratledge, who trained at center last spring, demonstrated promise at right guard but has expressed his willingness to adapt to the team’s needs.

On locker clean-out day, Ratledge acknowledged Glasgow’s mentorship, stating, “He kind of took me under his wing so that meant a lot to me.” This sentiment reflects the impact Glasgow had on younger players during his time with the Lions.

As the Lions embark on this new chapter, the future of their offensive line remains uncertain, but they are poised to make strategic moves to strengthen their roster. With Glasgow’s departure, the team is left to evaluate its options and address its needs effectively as they aim for a successful season ahead.
