Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Laughs Off Faceplant During World Series Race
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has vowed never to sprint again after a humorous incident during a World Series workout in Toronto. On Thursday, while engaging in a light-hearted race with second baseman Hyeseong Kim, Roberts took a tumble, falling flat on his face as he rounded second base.
The playful competition was meant to inject some levity into the team’s preparations. However, it quickly became a memorable moment when Roberts lost his footing and fell to the ground. The 53-year-old coach, known for his strategic acumen, later joked about the mishap, saying, “I clearly wasn’t thinking… I wasn’t trying to do a face-plant at shortstop, and yeah, the legs just gave way.” He humorously added, “That will be the last full sprint I ever do in my life.”
Despite the fall, Roberts showed his resilience. After getting up, he feigned a hamstring injury, maintaining the light-hearted atmosphere. “I got some meds in me. I’m still going to post. I’m probable. So it’s good. Recovered. Not my best decision, but it worked out,” he stated, indicating he was ready to continue with his responsibilities.
Teammate Miguel Rojas also found humor in the situation, suggesting that Roberts might have had a better chance of winning the race if he had run in a straight line from first to third base. Rojas commented, “I think that was the initial thought of the race, but then he wanted to prove a point that he can beat him from that start, and it wasn’t enough. We all saw the results.”
Roberts acknowledged that his family had reached out to him, with his children not particularly thrilled about the viral incident. Beyond his current role, Roberts is also remembered for his pivotal stolen base during the 2004 American League Championship Series, which helped the Boston Red Sox break an 86-year championship drought against the New York Yankees.
As the Dodgers prepare for the next game of the World Series, Roberts’ light-hearted moment serves as a reminder of the team’s camaraderie and the pressures they face in pursuit of the championship. With the stakes high, his willingness to engage in such a playful challenge demonstrates his ability to connect with players and ease the tension of competition.
The Dodgers are currently facing elimination, and the team’s performance in the upcoming games will be crucial. Roberts’ humorous misadventure may just be the morale boost the players need as they move forward in their quest for the title.
