Fantasy Football Week 16: Brown, Nacua Shine; Allen, Jacobs Struggle
The Week 16 fantasy football landscape witnessed impressive performances from players like Chase Brown, Puka Nacua, and Chris Olave. Meanwhile, Josh Allen, Josh Jacobs, and Baker Mayfield underperformed, leaving many fantasy managers disappointed. Analysts Matt Bowen and Tristan H. Cockcroft provide insights into the standout winners and losers of the week.
Notable Winners of Week 16
Chase Brown, running back for the Cincinnati Bengals, delivered an exceptional performance, scoring a personal-best 32.9 fantasy points. His two receiving touchdowns were crucial, especially given the Bengals’ defensive struggles. Brown managed to maintain a steady average of at least five yards per carry in four of the last six games, positioning him as a top-10 fantasy running back for the upcoming championship week against the Arizona Cardinals.
Following closely was Puka Nacua, wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, who exploded onto the fantasy scene with a career-high 46.5 points. This performance not only propelled him to the top of the seasonal scoring leaderboard, surpassing Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but also marked his status as a contender for the fantasy playoffs MVP. Nacua’s remarkable consistency, with at least 167 receiving yards in three consecutive games, has made him a key player to watch in the upcoming matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Another standout was Chris Olave of the New Orleans Saints, who scored 36.8 points in a decisive win over the New York Jets. Olave caught 10 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his value as the primary target for rookie quarterback Tyler Shough. His impressive form makes him a viable WR1 option against the Tennessee Titans in Week 17.
Quarterback Justin Herbert also had a season-best outing, scoring 30.20 fantasy points against the Dallas Cowboys. His performance included two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown, though challenging matchups against the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos await in the coming weeks.
Other noteworthy performances included Joe Burrow, who rebounded from a poor Week 15 to score 29.96 points against the Dolphins, and James Cook III of the Buffalo Bills, who contributed 26.4 points in a victory over the Cleveland Browns.
Disappointments of Week 16
In contrast, Josh Allen struggled, earning a season-low 6.90 fantasy points against the Browns. Suffering a foot injury during the game, Allen’s performance was hindered, and he managed only 44 passing yards. His upcoming matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles poses another challenge, but many fantasy managers hope for a rebound.
Running back Josh Jacobs faced difficulties as well, scoring just 4.8 points due to a knee issue that limited his effectiveness. His fumble further compounded his struggles, and his status will be closely monitored ahead of a matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17.
The New York Giants‘ Jaxson Dart and Wan’Dale Robinson also had disappointing outings, with Dart scoring merely 0.02 points in a conservative offensive strategy. Both players are expected to face a softer defense in their next game against the Las Vegas Raiders, but their recent performances raise concerns.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield managed only 12.7 points in a loss to the Panthers, struggling to exceed 200 passing yards in six consecutive games. Finally, tight end Travis Kelce experienced one of the worst performances of his career, scoring just 1.6 points without Patrick Mahomes on the field.
Injury Updates and Future Impact
Injuries also impacted player performances significantly. Quinshon Judkins of the Cleveland Browns suffered a broken leg, leaving the field in an air cast. His absence could open opportunities for Raheim Sanders, who posted 46 total yards in relief.
J.J. McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings faced a potential setback with a hand injury, and if he is unable to play in Week 17, backup Max Brosmer will take the reins. Meanwhile, Gardner Minshew of the Kansas City Chiefs suffered an ACL tear, leaving the team with a third starting quarterback as they approach a challenging contest against the Denver Broncos.
As the fantasy football season approaches its climax, managers will need to navigate these performances and injuries carefully to secure their championship aspirations. Week 17 promises more action and excitement as teams vie for playoff positions and individual accolades.
