Hataoka and Yamashita Lead After First Round of Toto Japan Classic
Japanese golfers Nasa Hataoka and Miyu Yamashita made a strong start at the LPGA’s Toto Japan Classic, each carding a remarkable 7-under 65 during the first round on October 26, 2023. Both players currently lead the tournament held at the Seta Golf Club in Otsu, Japan. Hataoka, aiming for her seventh title on the LPGA Tour, and Yamashita, seeking her third, set the stage for an exciting competition ahead.
Trailing closely behind is Shin Ji-yai of South Korea, who finished just one stroke off the lead. The leaderboard is competitive, with three more Japanese golfers—Chisato Iwai, Akie Iwai, and Minami Katsu—two shots behind the leaders. The Iwai sisters, Chisato and Akie, are identical twins, adding a unique dynamic to the tournament.
This year’s competition features a tight field, with eight other players just three strokes off the pace. Among them is Minjee Lee from Australia, who earlier this year secured her third major title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. As the tournament unfolds, Lee’s experience adds to the excitement of the leaderboard.
Defending champion Rio Takeda struggled in the opening round, posting a 1-over 73, leaving her eight strokes behind the leaders. Takeda will need to make significant improvements in the following rounds to defend her title successfully.
As the tournament progresses, fans and players alike are eager to see if Hataoka can secure her seventh LPGA title or if Yamashita will clinch her third. With a mix of seasoned players and rising stars, the Toto Japan Classic promises to deliver thrilling golf over the coming days.
