Hawaii Punter Billy Gowers Enters Transfer Portal for New Opportunities

Billy Gowers, the University of Hawaii’s standout punter, has announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal. This marks the third consecutive offseason during which the Rainbow Warriors will seek a new starting punter. Gowers, at 29 years old, leaves behind a significant legacy, having set the program’s single-season record with an impressive average of 46.24 yards per punt.

Reflecting on his time in Hawaii, Gowers expressed gratitude for the experience. “I had such a great time in Hawaii,” he said. The Australian native joined the Warriors as a freshman in July and praised the program and its community, noting the welcoming atmosphere. “Living in Hawaii for six months and getting introduced to the people and culture was amazing.”

As Gowers pursues a professional football career, he feels that playing in a larger conference could enhance his prospects. The Mountain West Conference, to which UH has belonged since 2012, is currently undergoing changes, including the departure of five schools and the anticipated addition of UTEP and Northern Illinois in 2026.

Gowers acknowledged that his age is a critical factor in his decision. “I’m 29. I’m older than a lot of college kids,” he stated. He emphasized the urgency to maximize his time in the sport, as “my clock is running out, obviously, as being a professional athlete.” Gowers highlighted the limited timeframe in which athletes can perform at their peak, indicating that this motivated his transfer.

In 2024, another Australian punter, James “Thor” Rendell, initially accepted a scholarship with the Warriors but later withdrew in favor of a lucrative deal with Notre Dame. Gowers clarified that financial incentives did not drive his decision to transfer. “There’s money in college football, but it’s not the crux of my decision,” he explained. He emphasized that his experience in Hawaii was positive and that he appreciated the coaching staff and the opportunity to learn the sport.

Before transitioning to football, Gowers was involved in Australian rules football and even opened a barbershop in Melbourne. His journey into punting began in the summer of 2024 when he met with Nate Chapman, director and head punting coach at Prokick Australia. After excelling in a tryout, Gowers began his training with Prokick, which led to him receiving a scholarship offer from the Warriors after Lucas Borrow‘s appeal for an additional season was denied.

Gowers quickly made his mark at Hawaii with his powerful kicking abilities. He is noted for his capacity to execute both right and left-footed punts, with distances reaching up to 70 yards. Currently, he ranks tenth nationally in punting average, a testament to his skill and potential.

As Gowers embarks on this new chapter, the University of Hawaii now faces the challenge of finding a suitable replacement for a punter who made a significant impact on their program. The search for a new starting punter will be critical as the team prepares for future seasons.
