Hawks Aim for Redemption Against Blazers After Tough Loss
The Atlanta Hawks face the Portland Trail Blazers tonight at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, aiming to bounce back after a disappointing loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Hawks, who had enjoyed a three-game winning streak following the trade of star player Trae Young, fell to the Lakers despite their opponents missing key player Austin Reaves. This matchup is crucial for both teams as they seek to improve their standings in the NBA.
In their last game, the Hawks struggled against a Lakers team that was on a three-game losing streak. Los Angeles built a substantial lead of 32 points at one stage, ultimately winning 141-130. Atlanta managed to reduce the deficit to 11 points with nine minutes remaining, but the combined efforts of LeBron James, who scored 31 points, and Luka Doncic, who added 27 points, proved too much for the Hawks. Despite a strong performance from forward Jalen Johnson, who has averaged 23.4 points this season, he recorded just 13 points in this crucial game.
The Blazers, meanwhile, are coming off a blowout loss to the Golden State Warriors. Despite being considered a lesser threat in the Western Conference, the team has seen the emergence of Deni Avdija as an All-Star caliber player. Avdija has been instrumental in leading the team, averaging 26.1 points and 7.1 rebounds this season with a remarkable shooting efficiency. His potential absence for tonight’s game could significantly impact Portland’s performance.
Hawks’ defense has been a concern this season, ranking 25th in points allowed and 23rd in field goal percentage allowed. Their struggles were evident against the Lakers, where they allowed 141 points, highlighting the need for improvement. The Hawks currently sit 18th in offensive rating, a statistic they hope to elevate with the return of injured players Kris Porzingis and Zaccharie Risacher.
In contrast, the Blazers rank 23rd in offensive rating and have had difficulty capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Despite their challenges, they have shown resilience, winning seven of their last nine games before the loss to Golden State. The recent two-way play of Toumani Camara, who scored a career-high 25 points against the Houston Rockets, has provided a much-needed boost for Portland.
The matchup tonight will likely hinge on turnovers, as the Blazers lead the league in turnovers per game. Atlanta can capitalize on this weakness, especially with Avdija potentially sidelined. His absence would leave a significant gap in Portland’s offensive strategy, as he has been their best ball-handler and passer.
As for the players to watch, the Hawks will look for a bounce-back performance from Jalen Johnson. Despite a lackluster outing against the Lakers, he has demonstrated the ability to produce at a high level throughout the season. On the other side, if Caleb Love starts for the Blazers, his scoring capability could pose a challenge for Atlanta’s perimeter defense.
Looking ahead, both teams have crucial players on the injury report. For Atlanta, Porzingis and Risacher are confirmed out, while Luke Kennard and Mo Gueye are listed as questionable. Portland faces a similar situation, with Avdija doubtful and Jerami Grant, Kris Murray, Matisse Thybulle, and Scoot Henderson all out.
The game is set to tip-off at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. As both teams vie for a pivotal win, fans can expect an exciting matchup filled with high stakes and competitive energy.
