Then I made a few appearances and started scoring some goals.” This breakthrough was marked by a memorable goal against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League, which he regards as one of his favorites. “Playing in the Champions League is something you dream of since you were seven or eight,” he added.

Rising Star Amidst Transfer Interest

McAtee’s performance has attracted significant attention, particularly during the January transfer window when Bayer Leverkusen submitted a loan bid with an option to buy for approximately £25 million. Although the opportunity for increased playing time was appealing, manager Pep Guardiola considered McAtee an integral part of the team’s future. Even a personal appeal from Leverkusen’s boss Xabi Alonso failed to convince Guardiola to let the young talent go.

As the season progressed, McAtee’s involvement in the first team increased. Despite Manchester City’s disappointing finish in third place in the league, he made an impressive 27 appearances, including a notable appearance at Real Madrid in February 2023. His growing confidence was evident when he scored against Crystal Palace in April, celebrating with a backflip—a skill he attributes to his mother’s background as a dance teacher.

“For me personally, it was a good season, even though for the team it wasn’t,” McAtee remarked. “Playing at Real Madrid was another dream come true; it doesn’t really get much bigger.” His experiences alongside teammates like Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis have helped him stay motivated, especially during the early parts of the season when game time was scarce.
