Kevin Durant Addresses Rockets’ Loss to Warriors, Highlights Communication Issues

After De’Anthony Melton successfully executed a putback with 5.3 seconds remaining, Durant made one of two free throws, despite expressing a desire to miss the second shot for a chance to tie the game. “Our communication is not bad, but it could be better,” Durant commented, as reported by Lachard Binkley of Sports Illustrated. He emphasized the need for improved dialogue, particularly against teams like the Warriors that employ intricate off-ball movements. “We’re going to have to communicate more. I just think we can step it up a notch,” he added.

Coaching Perspective on Communication Breakdown

Houston Rockets head coach, Ime Udoka, echoed Durant’s sentiments, highlighting the team’s defensive lapses as contributing factors to the loss. “Some switches. I mean, it was all game long on and off the ball. Not communicating, not being physical with the ball… It’s that stuff that we should have taken care of earlier this season,” Udoka explained.

He pointed out that small mistakes in communication ultimately cost them the game. “Still guarded well enough to win one-on-one with all the mistakes we made. Missed some shots, turnover, and one down the stretch. But lack of communication is the main culprit,” he remarked.

Udoka further expressed frustration at the team’s inability to execute basic defensive strategies. “I feel like I’m louder than a lot of guys on the court from the sideline, and guys aren’t hearing it. Guys aren’t switching,” he stated. This highlights a concerning trend as the Rockets aim to improve their performance as the season progresses.
