Leicester City Parts Ways with Manager Marti Cifuentes Immediately

Leicester City has announced the immediate departure of manager Marti Cifuentes following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Oxford United in the Championship. The club’s board convened on Sunday to discuss Cifuentes’ future after the defeat extended Leicester’s winless streak to six matches, leaving the team languishing in 14th place on the league table.

In the wake of Cifuentes’ departure, first team coach Andy King will take over managerial duties. Cifuentes joined Leicester as the successor to Ruud van Nistelrooy after the club was relegated from the Premier League last season. During his tenure, he recorded a modest record of 10 wins, eight draws, and 11 defeats.

Leicester’s performance this season has been lackluster, with only two victories in their last eight league encounters. The team also faced an early exit from the Carabao Cup, suffering a first-round defeat to League One’s Huddersfield Town in August.

Cifuentes inherited a challenging situation, with a significant number of players departing the club over the summer. Notably, Jamie Vardy, a key figure in Leicester’s history, completed his 500th appearance before moving on. Leicester’s recruitment strategy also faced criticism, as the club did not secure any outfield players until September, when they brought in striker Julian Carranza and midfielders Jordan James and Aaron Ramsey on loan.

While Leicester struggles, other teams that were also relegated from the Premier League are experiencing varied fortunes. Ipswich Town has improved its standings, now sitting in third place in the Championship. Conversely, Southampton parted ways with manager Will Still in November, with the club precariously positioned just three points above the relegation zone.

Cifuentes, who previously managed Queens Park Rangers, spent just over a year and a half with the London club, achieving finishes of 18th and 15th in the Championship. His coaching career includes stints at clubs such as Hammarby, Aalborg BK, and Sandefjord, as well as experience in the academy setups at Millwall and Ajax.

As Leicester City embarks on a new chapter under King, the club faces the critical task of revitalizing its performance to avoid further decline in the Championship standings.
