Maye Leads Patriots to Victory, Secures Playoff Berth
BALTIMORE — In a decisive moment for the New England Patriots, quarterback Drake Maye delivered a standout performance, leading his team to a 28-24 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on March 15, 2024. This win not only secured a playoff berth for the Patriots but also marked a significant turnaround from their previous week’s heartbreaking loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Maye, reflecting on the previous game, described it as the “elephant in the room,” acknowledging the pressure he faced after failing to lead a game-winning drive. This time, he rose to the occasion, orchestrating a nine-play, 89-yard touchdown drive that culminated in a game-winning score. “It was kind of a wake-up call last week,” Maye stated. “This week, it was like, ‘man, let’s not have that feeling two weeks in a row.'”
In an impressive outing, Maye completed 31 of 44 passes for 380 yards, marking the first 300-yard passing game of his NFL career. He threw two touchdowns and only one interception. Mike Vrabel, head coach of the Patriots, praised Maye’s resilience, stating, “Just gritty. He got hit. They pressured. He just kept getting up and battling. He didn’t flinch.”
Maye faced significant pressure during the game, particularly in the fourth quarter, where he was pressured on 47% of his dropbacks. Despite this, he completed an impressive 86% of his passes in the final quarter, averaging 9.9 yards per attempt. With the Patriots trailing 24-21 and just over five minutes remaining, Maye took possession at the New England 11-yard line.
He quickly connected with receiver Mack Hollins for a 20-yard gain, then followed with short passes to running back Rhamondre Stevenson and receiver Stefon Diggs. A contentious long pass attempt to receiver Kayshon Boutte was deemed incomplete, though Patriots players believed it should have drawn a defensive pass interference call against Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey.
On a critical fourth-and-2 play, Maye found Diggs for a pivotal 21-yard catch-and-run. Diggs, who led the team with nine receptions for 138 yards, commented on the play, “That was a great ball. I ran a route, tried to put speed on him, and Drake put it where only I could get it.”
After a short completion to Hollins, Stevenson dashed 21 yards for the game-winning touchdown just before the two-minute warning. The Ravens’ subsequent possession ended in disaster when Patriots defensive end K’Lavon Chaisson forced a fumble on receiver Zay Flowers, which was recovered by cornerback Marcus Jones. The Patriots successfully ran out the clock to seal the win.
“So proud of this team. It took everybody,” Maye expressed after the match. “Trust, belief — I like our chances when we’re in those scenarios.” With this victory, the Patriots improved to 12-3 overall and maintained a perfect 7-0 record on the road. Maye’s achievement makes him the first starting quarterback since 1950 to lead his team to seven consecutive road wins in his first or second season.
While the atmosphere in the postgame locker room was jubilant, with the Patriots celebrating their first playoff berth since 2021, there remains a focus on higher aspirations. The team’s next challenge is against the New York Jets on Sunday, followed by a home game against the Miami Dolphins. Winning both would secure their first AFC East title since 2019. “It’s awesome to clinch the playoffs, but we want to win the division,” Maye concluded.
