Northwestern Dominates Central Michigan 34-7 in GameAbove Sports Bowl
The Northwestern Wildcats secured a decisive victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas, winning 34-7 in the GameAbove Sports Bowl held at Ford Field on March 15, 2024. This win marks Northwestern’s sixth consecutive bowl victory, maintaining their undefeated postseason streak since a loss to Tennessee in the 2015 Outback Bowl.
The Wildcats showcased a strong defensive performance, capitalizing on Central Michigan’s turnovers. The Chippewas struggled, giving up four turnovers—three fumbles and an interception—throughout the game. Northwestern’s quarterback, Preston Stone, played a pivotal role, throwing three touchdown passes and leading his team effectively.
Central Michigan had an early opportunity to score, stopping Northwestern on a critical 4th-and-1 at the Wildcats’ 34-yard line. However, Cade Graham missed a 43-yard field goal attempt, which proved costly. With the game scoreless midway through the second quarter, Northwestern’s Braden Turner intercepted a pass from Angel Flores at the Central Michigan 29-yard line. Stone quickly capitalized on this turnover, throwing a 23-yard touchdown pass to Griffin Wilde, putting Northwestern ahead 7-0.
The momentum shifted further when Central Michigan’s Joe Labas fumbled on the first play after the kickoff, allowing Northwestern to recover at the Chippewas’ 18-yard line. Caleb Komolafe then scored on a 2-yard run, extending the Wildcats’ lead to 14-0. Central Michigan’s troubles continued as Flores fumbled again, leading to another quick touchdown for Northwestern when Stone connected with Lawson Albright for a 23-yard score. In just over three minutes, the Wildcats had scored three touchdowns.
The second half saw Central Michigan’s struggles continue. On their opening drive, Flores fumbled once more, and Turner returned the ball 47 yards for yet another Northwestern touchdown, increasing the score to 27-0. Stone added another touchdown pass to Wilde in the third quarter, making it 34-0.
Central Michigan avoided a shutout when Labas threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Brock Townsend with 6:11 remaining in the game. Despite the late score, the Chippewas’ performance highlighted their difficulties against a Big Ten opponent. This loss brings Central Michigan’s bowl game record against Big Ten teams to 0-3, with all three defeats occurring at Ford Field.
Head coach Matt Drinkell has emphasized building a robust defense since his arrival, which showed promise in this matchup. However, the Chippewas finished the season ranked 93rd in scoring offense and 107th in total offensive yards per game, underscoring the need for improvement moving forward.
For Northwestern, the focus shifts to enhancing their offensive strategies, particularly in identifying playmakers through the transfer portal. Although they managed to score efficiently off turnovers, the Wildcats averaged only three yards per carry, indicating room for growth in their ground game.
This game not only showcased Northwestern’s dominance but also highlighted the challenges Central Michigan faces as they look to bolster their offense for future seasons.
