Penn State’s Rollercoaster 2025 Season: Highlights and Lowlights
The 2025 season for the Penn State Nittany Lions ended with a disappointing 6-6 record, culminating in a Pinstripe Bowl matchup against Clemson scheduled for December 30 at Yankee Stadium. Expectations were high at the beginning of the season, but the campaign was marked by both notable achievements and significant setbacks.
Standout Players and Performance Recognition
Several players stood out during the tumultuous season. The offensive player of the year award went to running back Kaytron Allen, who achieved his second consecutive 1,000-yard season, rushing for 1,303 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. This impressive performance made him the school’s all-time leading rusher.
On defense, linebacker Amare Campbell emerged as a key player, leading the team with 96 tackles, along with 9.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. His fumble recovery, which he returned for a touchdown, showcased his impact on the field.
In a season that saw challenges, quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer stepped up after an injury to starter Drew Allar. Grunkemeyer completed 69.4% of his passes, accumulating 1,079 yards and six touchdowns with four interceptions. His progression throughout the season was notable, particularly during a critical three-game winning streak.
Special teams also saw excellence, with kicker Ryan Barker making 15-of-16 field goal attempts and converting 43-of-44 extra points, solidifying his place in school history with the highest career percentage in field goals.
Memorable Moments and Missed Opportunities
The season included thrilling plays and disappointing losses. One of the most significant moments occurred during a closely contested game against Indiana, where the Lions fell short, losing 27-24. After rallying from a 20-7 deficit, they took a late lead, only to see Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza orchestrate a decisive drive for the win.
The worst game of the season was a 42-37 loss to UCLA. Despite being heavily favored, Penn State struggled against a Bruins team that had yet to win a game that season, allowing them to build a commanding lead. The Lions had opportunities to secure a victory but faltered in crucial moments, including a dropped pass in the end zone.
In terms of surprises, Grunkemeyer’s first start at Iowa was particularly noteworthy. He demonstrated leadership in a challenging environment, contributing to the team’s late-season success. Conversely, the defense struggled under coordinator Jim Knowles, unable to maintain leads in four different games, which proved detrimental to the season’s overall success.
The season’s disappointments were further highlighted by the firing of head coach James Franklin after a loss to Northwestern. This decision came after a three-year period in which the team had a record of 34-8. Athletic director Pat Kraft cited the need for a change, which reflected the dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.
The campaign concluded with several players expressing support for interim coach Terry Smith in light of Franklin’s dismissal. A leaked audio of a meeting between Kraft and players drew attention, revealing candid discussions about the team’s future.
In terms of individual achievements, Allen’s record-breaking performance in a victory over Nebraska and Singleton’s milestones against Rutgers stood out. Both players solidified their legacies, with Singleton breaking career records previously held by Saquon Barkley.
As the Nittany Lions prepare for the Pinstripe Bowl, the focus will be on rebuilding and moving forward from a season filled with highs and lows. The upcoming game against Clemson will serve as a pivotal moment for the future direction of the program.
In the words of defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, reflecting on the season, “We just weren’t ready to play, I guess. It was just a bad day for our defense.” As Penn State looks ahead, the hope remains that the lessons learned this season will pave the way for future success.
