Pueblo County Hornets Surge with Balanced Attack in Basketball Season

The Pueblo County Hornets girls basketball team is experiencing a strong season, currently holding a record of 12-2 with three victories in the South-Central League (S-CL). Under the leadership of head coach Tierra Holland, the team has demonstrated a notable commitment to developing their skills both on and off the court.

“Dedication is the biggest thing,” Holland stated. “That’s where it starts. If you’re not dedicated, then you can’t really be good. They show up and show out.” The Hornets have adopted a more aggressive style of play this year, focusing on speed and scoring opportunities. Holland emphasized the importance of building on their current strengths: “We just need to keep growing on what we have set in stone, instead of taking steps back, and taking steps in the right direction.”

Team Dynamics and Strategy

The Hornets possess a diverse roster that allows them to attack from multiple positions, making it difficult for opponents to focus on a single player. “We don’t really have one main scorer,” Holland explained. “In past years, it’s kind of been one scorer, and this year I have 10 girls on my bench; I want them all to score if they can. It’s easy to shut down one person. It’s not easy to shut down a whole team.”

Since 2022, the Hornets have consistently finished second in the S-CL, competing against some formidable teams. This season, they aim to assert their dominance in the league and contend for the top spot. Holland highlighted the potential impact of key players, such as sophomore Carlee Langston, who has recently emerged as a significant contributor. “She came off the bench and really came out of nowhere. I’m really stoked with her performance,” Holland noted.

Point guard Parker McCafferty is another vital player for the Hornets, consistently providing strong performances that set the team’s rhythm. Holland remarked, “If she’s having a rough game, we all have a rough game.”

Challenges Ahead

Despite their successes, the Hornets face challenges that need to be addressed to secure the S-CL title and make a deeper run in the playoffs. Holland identified their turnover issues as a primary concern. “We kind of struggle with turnovers, but our defense is pretty dang good,” she stated. “Our offense is rolling right now, so if we could just limit our turnovers, that’s what will get us that SCL title for sure.”

With their current form and the right adjustments, the Pueblo County Hornets are well-positioned to make a significant impact this season and challenge for the championship. Their balanced attack, combined with a commitment to teamwork and improvement, suggests a promising future for the team as they continue to develop under the guidance of Coach Holland.
