Rams Dismiss Special Teams Coordinator Chase Blackburn After Loss

The Los Angeles Rams have parted ways with special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn following a disappointing performance in their 38-37 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks on November 2, 2023. This decision, confirmed by two sources, marks a significant moment in head coach Sean McVay’s nine-year tenure, as it is the first time he has dismissed a coach during the season. Blackburn had served in this role for three seasons.

The Rams’ special teams unit has struggled throughout the season, with Thursday’s game highlighting these issues prominently. In the fourth quarter, with the Rams holding a 16-point lead, Rashid Shaheed returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown. This pivotal moment not only shifted the momentum but ultimately led to Seattle’s comeback, allowing them to seize control of the NFC West standings.

Reflecting on the critical play, McVay stated, “I saw a flat, low kick that was not at all intended for what we wanted. You give a guy like that an opportunity, that’s where the momentum flipped.” The inability to execute on special teams has plagued the Rams, contributing significantly to multiple losses this season.

This defeat was not an isolated incident. In their Week 3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, two blocked field goals, including one on a potential game-winning attempt, underscored the special teams’ struggles. The Rams also missed a crucial field goal during a Week 5 overtime loss against the San Francisco 49ers.

In response to ongoing issues, the Rams made adjustments by bringing in kicker Harrison Mevis and long snapper Jake McQuaide to replace Josh Karty and Alex Ward, respectively. These changes initially appeared to pay off, resulting in 39 consecutive successful field goals and extra points. However, that streak came to an end when Mevis missed a potential game-winning kick against Seattle.

As the Rams look ahead, they have yet to announce an interim replacement for Blackburn. With a critical season still in progress, the team aims to address its special teams challenges and regain momentum in the upcoming weeks.
