Ravens Face Tough Decisions on Lamar Jackson’s Future
The Baltimore Ravens are entering an offseason filled with critical decisions, particularly regarding the future of quarterback Lamar Jackson. According to ESPN NFL insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano, the situation surrounding Jackson’s contract has become a pressing issue for the franchise as they navigate their options moving forward.
Graziano emphasized the uncertainty, stating, “I’m still not sure how likely it is that there’s change here, but the Ravens have to do something with Lamar Jackson’s contract or move on.” The urgency stems from Jackson having no guaranteed money remaining on his current deal and a hefty $74.5 million cap hit slated for 2026. This financial burden makes it imperative for the Ravens to either extend his contract to alleviate the cap impact or consider trading him.
The decision to extend Jackson appears logical, yet the Ravens’ lack of playoff success during his tenure raises questions. Jackson holds a 3-5 record in eight career postseason games. Among 29 quarterbacks with multiple playoff starts since 2018, he ranks 24th in completion percentage at 60.6 percent and has the seventh-worst passer rating at 84.6. Furthermore, he has been sacked at a rate higher than only Daniel Jones.
Despite these playoff struggles, Jackson remains a unique talent and arguably gives the Ravens their best chance at securing a Lombardi Trophy in the near future. His accolades, including four Pro Bowl selections, three All-Pro honors, and two MVP awards, underscore his potential. However, Jackson’s availability has become a recurring concern, as he has missed multiple games in three of his five seasons in the league.
Most recently, he was inactive for three games due to a hamstring injury sustained in a Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He also exited the Week 16 home game against the New England Patriots due to a back injury. As of Monday, the team reported that Jackson is “day-to-day with a ‘significant’ contusion.”
With the Ravens currently sitting at 7-8, they face a critical matchup against the Green Bay Packers (9-5-1) on Saturday, January 6, 2024. A win is essential for Baltimore to keep their playoff hopes alive, but they also need the Pittsburgh Steelers (9-6) to lose against the Cleveland Browns (3-12) on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
As the postseason looms, the Ravens’ chances of advancing remain slim, with NFL.com estimating a 9 percent likelihood of making the playoffs. This stark reality forces the organization to confront Jackson’s contract sooner rather than later. While the prospect of entering “quarterback purgatory” is daunting, it is also a challenge that requires careful consideration, especially given the financial implications of a potential contract exceeding $60 million per season.
The Ravens must weigh whether they can build a competitive team with Jackson commanding such a significant portion of the salary cap. As the offseason approaches, the decision-makers in Baltimore will need to act decisively to determine the best path forward for both the franchise and their star quarterback.
