The Denver Broncos faced a pivotal moment in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots on January 25, 2026. With starting quarterback Bo Nix sidelined due to a fractured right ankle, backup Jarrett Stidham stepped into the spotlight and delivered a noteworthy performance. Stidham’s statistics outshone Nix in a critical area, marking a significant moment for the team.

Nix suffered his injury during a close 33-30 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round and is expected to be out for approximately 12 weeks. Despite Stidham’s lack of starting experience since the 2023 NFL season, Broncos head coach Sean Payton saw potential in his backup quarterback. Early in the game, Stidham showcased his ability with a remarkable 52-yard completion to wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr., marking the longest air yard pass by any Broncos quarterback this season.

This impressive throw came on a crucial 3rd-and-10 play from the Broncos’ 41-yard line, where the ball traveled 41 yards through the air. Stidham’s deep completion not only set up a six-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Courtland Sutton two plays later, but it also highlighted the risk-taking approach that Payton decided to adopt for the game.

Nix, the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is known for his powerful arm. He had previously thrown a touchdown pass of 67 yards during a 30-24 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in December 2024, demonstrating his capability to make long throws. Nevertheless, Stidham’s performance against the Patriots raised questions about Nix’s usage under Payton’s offensive strategy. In his first two seasons with Denver, Nix has averaged only 7.3 intended air yards per pass attempt, according to data from Pro Football Reference.

Payton’s coaching philosophy often prioritizes minimizing risks, which could explain the limited downfield passing opportunities for Nix. Still, his decision to allow Stidham to attempt more ambitious throws suggests an effort to build confidence in the backup quarterback. “That’s his personality. He’s gonna rip it, you know?” Payton commented on Stidham’s playing style. “That’ll be our approach.”

Stidham’s ability to deliver in high-pressure situations could be critical as the Broncos advance in the playoffs. His performance not only sets a tone for the team but may also influence future quarterback decisions as the season progresses. The Broncos now have a unique opportunity to assess Stidham’s capabilities while Nix recuperates, potentially reshaping their offensive strategy for the remainder of the championship run.
