Trevor May Transitions from MLB Pitcher to Influential Commentator
Trevor May, a former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, made headlines with his announcement of retirement after the 2023 season. During a live stream on Twitch, he delivered a candid message urging Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher to “sell the team.” This statement came as Fisher pursued a controversial plan to relocate the Athletics to Las Vegas. “Let someone who actually takes pride in the things they own, own something,” May stated, highlighting his commitment to the game.
While May’s retirement marks the end of his playing career, it simultaneously signals the beginning of a new chapter as a prominent voice in the baseball community. He is leveraging his platform as a content creator to address critical issues within MLB, often simplifying complex topics for a broader audience. His show, “Mayday!”, available on the Foul Territory YouTube network and his personal channel, explores various subjects, from trending news to life as a major leaguer.
Engaging Content and Insightful Commentary
May’s approach to content creation combines entertainment with education. Episodes often feature lighthearted challenges, like attempting to throw 100 mph or hitting home runs at San Francisco’s Oracle Park. However, he does not shy away from serious matters, such as the impending labor issues within the league. “There are so many moving pieces — so many little, subtle details that can affect the game in major ways,” May explained in a recent interview with the Daily News. He aims to clarify these complexities, making the sport more enjoyable for fans.
With over 159,000 subscribers on YouTube and more than 188,000 followers on Twitch, May’s influence continues to grow. Recent episodes of “Mayday!” have tackled significant topics, including the resignation of Tony Clark as the executive director of the MLB Players Association and the historic arbitration victory of pitcher Tarik Skubal. His informal style, characterized by minimal graphics and a direct camera focus, allows him to connect easily with viewers.
May’s expertise stems from his nine seasons in MLB, during which he recorded a career record of 36-28 with a 4.24 ERA and 33 saves. His journey included two seasons with the Mets, where he posted a 9-3 record and a 4.00 ERA from 2021 to 2022. Yet, his interests extend beyond the diamond. He began creating content in 2016, initially focusing on video games, and later provided insights into his recovery from Tommy John surgery. As a member of the Mets, he documented life as a player during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Navigating Labor Issues in MLB
As the MLB and the MLB Players Association approach the expiration of their collective bargaining agreement on December 1, 2023, May’s discussions on labor relations have become increasingly relevant. The potential for a work stoppage looms, with many anticipating the first cancellation of games since 1995. May acknowledges the complexities of these negotiations, noting that the subject can often become bogged down in jargon. He aims to present these topics in layman’s terms, expressing concern that tailored public relations responses obscure the real issues at stake.
“The motivations for both sides are crucial to understand,” May stated. He emphasizes that competitive balance is vital for players, alongside their financial security. Recognizing the dual priorities of both players and owners, he strives to clarify these motivations for his audience.
While May’s frankness has garnered admiration, it has also made him a polarizing figure. During the 2021-22 offseason’s work stoppage, he publicly criticized MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, which he acknowledges may have caused friction with the league’s leadership. His commitment to fact-checking and transparency has led him to become a critical voice during discussions about the league’s direction.
Looking ahead, May envisions expanding his storytelling capabilities beyond YouTube and Twitch. He dreams of producing films and documentaries that delve into the intricacies of baseball. Additionally, he is developing a pitch-development lab, which he plans to document on camera, furthering his exploration of the sport.
May’s journey reflects his desire to provide meaningful insights into baseball while maintaining his authenticity. “When you do TV, you get 30 seconds to make your point,” he remarked. “I didn’t like that I couldn’t just go on for five minutes and talk about a thing. That’s why I leaned into my own thing.” As he embraces this new chapter, Trevor May is poised to remain a significant voice in the baseball community, advocating for transparency and understanding in the sport he loves.
