Warriors Coach Kerr and Green Clash During Victory Over Magic

The Golden State Warriors secured a decisive 120-97 victory over the Orlando Magic on December 18, 2023, but the game was marred by a notable incident between coach Steve Kerr and forward Draymond Green. A heated exchange during a third-quarter timeout led to Green leaving the bench, missing the final 20 minutes of the contest. At the time of the argument, the Warriors were trailing 71-66.

The conflict arose after Green committed a turnover and engaged with an official. Kerr called for a timeout to refocus his team, expressing concerns about their level of concentration. The ensuing argument escalated, prompting Green to exit to the locker room. “We had it out a little bit,” Kerr stated after the game. “He made his decision to go back to the locker room to cool off. That’s all I’m going to say about it. Everything is private.”

Both starting wing Moses Moody and assistant coach Jerry Stackhouse attempted to defuse the situation. Following further exchanges, Green walked down the tunnel to the locker room, where he spent the final 8:31 of the third quarter. Several veteran teammates, including Jimmy Butler III and Al Horford, checked on him during this time.

The Warriors flourished in the absence of Green, with Stephen Curry showcasing an impressive performance. He recorded 26 points, making all six of his attempts in the third quarter. Ultimately, the team extended their lead and completed the game with a 23-point margin, improving their record to 15-15.

Despite the team’s success, the incident between Kerr and Green overshadowed the victory. Kerr confirmed that Green would not return to the game, stating, “He left. He went back to the locker room. We moved forward and the guys played great.” This marked the second consecutive game in which Green departed early; he was ejected during the previous game against the Phoenix Suns after just eight minutes of play.

Kerr emphasized the importance of Green to the team, noting, “We need Draymond. He’s a champion. We’ve been together for a long time… It’s unfortunate what happened, but it happened.” The coach’s comments come as the Warriors have faced scrutiny regarding Green’s recent performance, particularly following his 13 combined turnovers in the two preceding losses.

Following the game, Green addressed reporters, maintaining that he did not feel frustrated about his performance, stating, “I had one turnover today. I had the ball the whole time I was in the game.” He expressed confidence in his ability to manage issues on the court effectively.

An hour after the game, Green had yet to speak with Kerr regarding the incident but made a point to clarify his perspective to the media. Kerr suggested that there would be no lasting effects from the altercation, noting that disagreements are not uncommon between the two, given their long history together. “We’ve been at this now for a long time,” Green remarked. “Sometimes you’re with people for a long time, and there’s a level of comfort, and things happen. We move forward.”

As the Warriors continue their season, both Kerr and Green will need to address any lingering tensions to maintain team cohesion and focus on their performance.
