URGENT UPDATE: Cando, North Dakota, has lost its last Civil War veteran, Lewis V. Hackett, who passed away on March 12, 1926, at the age of 81. His death marks a significant moment in history as the community bids farewell to a living link to the tumultuous era of the American Civil War.

Funeral services were held at the local Methodist church, officiated by Rev. A. E. Hooke. Community members gathered to honor Hackett’s remarkable life and service, reflecting on the courage of those who fought for their country. Hackett’s passing comes after a prolonged illness, and his absence leaves a profound impact on Cando.

Born in Driden Springs, New York, in 1845, Hackett enlisted in Company M, First Regiment of Ohio Heavy Artillery in 1863. He served valiantly until his honorable discharge in 1865. Hackett moved to the Dakota Territory in 1884, where he homesteaded near Aneta, North Dakota, before eventually settling in Cando.

Hackett was married to Nora States and was the proud father of five children, though only two survive him: L. B. Hackett of Sarles and Mrs. Hazel Johnstone of Hansboro. The loss of Hackett resonates deeply, as he was the last of his kind, a symbol of resilience and history in a rapidly changing world.
