CSUF Innovates Biomanufacturing Education Amid Job Surge

UPDATE: Cal State Fullerton is taking decisive steps to address the surging demand for skilled professionals in the biomanufacturing sector. Graduate student Wendy Joya is leading a groundbreaking initiative to develop new high school and college curriculums, as well as degree and certificate programs tailored for this fast-growing industry.

With the biotechnology field booming in Southern California, experts emphasize the urgency for educational advancements. Sagil James, professor of mechanical engineering and Joya’s research adviser, states that the region saw the largest job gains in 2023 within biotechnology, medical devices, and research tools—sectors closely tied to biomanufacturing.

“The largest job gains in the region in 2023 were observed in biotechnology, medical devices and equipment and research tools, all closely linked to biomanufacturing,” James explained. This rapid growth underscores the critical need for a workforce equipped with relevant skills.

Joya’s innovative research focuses on igniting student interest in biomanufacturing careers, utilizing cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality to make the field more engaging. “I find it fascinating how this field turns scientific research into real products that improve lives,” Joya expressed, highlighting the real-world impact of biomanufacturing.

The initiative aims to close the skills gap and promote equity in STEM fields, ensuring that students gain hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills. “We want to prepare students for meaningful and well-paying careers,” James added, who is also directing the project funded by a substantial $129,208 grant from the Global HSI Equity Innovation Hub at California State University, Northridge.

This week, CSUF is also hosting the Green Energy, Manufacturing and Technology Expo, an event designed to spotlight clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. The expo invites students, educators, and industry professionals to explore opportunities in workforce development and green technology, further enhancing the region’s role as a leader in biomanufacturing education.

Cal State Fullerton is recognized as the largest university in the CSU system and the only campus in Orange County. Known for its commitment to student success, CSUF boasts over 100 academic degree programs and is a model for supporting first-generation and underrepresented students.
