Loyola-Chicago Honors Sister Jean with Jersey Patch This Season
URGENT UPDATE: Loyola-Chicago’s men’s basketball team will wear a special patch on their jerseys this season to honor the late Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, a cherished figure in the university community who passed away on October 9, 2023, at the age of 106. The announcement was made via a heartfelt social media post that declared, “Our biggest fan will be with us all season long.”
Sister Jean, who became a national icon during the Ramblers’ stunning run to the Final Four in 2018, served as the team’s chaplain and was known for her unwavering support and optimism. She joined Loyola-Chicago in 1991 and became an integral part of the basketball program just three years later, initially as an academic adviser before assuming the chaplain role.
The Ramblers’ Cinderella story in 2018 captured the hearts of fans everywhere as they advanced to the Final Four as a No. 11 seed, ultimately falling to Michigan. At the age of 98 during that tournament, Sister Jean was a constant presence, praying for the team and its opponents before each game, embodying the spirit of unity and determination.
As the Ramblers prepare to kick off their season on Monday, November 6, against Cleveland State, the team aims to carry Sister Jean’s legacy with them, reminding players and fans alike of her enduring influence.
Health challenges led Sister Jean to step down from her role earlier this season, but her impact on the Ramblers and the Loyola-Chicago community remains profound. Her vibrant spirit and dedication will be felt on the court as players don the jersey patch in her memory.
Fans and supporters are encouraged to share their memories and tributes as Loyola-Chicago embarks on a new season filled with hope and inspiration, carrying Sister Jean’s legacy into the future.
Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses and the Ramblers honor their beloved chaplain.
