BREAKING: In a stunning finish, Cyrus Shafie netted a decisive penalty kick in stoppage time, propelling the Mountain View Spartans to victory in the CCS Division I Championship. The match concluded with a score of 2-1 against the top-seeded Alvarez Eagles on October 17, 2023, marking Mountain View’s first D-I title in three years.

As the clock ticked down in the 100th minute, Shafie, who had already impressed with a hat trick in the semifinals, drew a crucial foul just inside the 18-yard box. With the championship on the line, he confidently stepped up to the spot and delivered a powerful kick that slipped past Alvarez’s goalkeeper, sealing the victory for Mountain View.

“I knew the clock had stopped. It was two minutes,” Shafie stated. “Anything I’m looking for, it’s a goal or foul. I saw the kid, he slid in. I decided not to touch the ball, so he hit me and it worked out perfectly.”

This championship was a significant moment for the Spartans, who entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed but exited as the undisputed champion. Coach Jim McGuirk praised Shafie’s performance, declaring, “I haven’t had a player more confident than Cyrus probably ever.”

The match began with an early goal from Nicholas Garzino, who capitalized on a corner kick from Shafie, putting Mountain View ahead 1-0 just five minutes in. However, Alvarez quickly responded with a goal from Omar Lopez, making it 1-1 by the 10th minute. The teams battled through a tense stalemate, with each side threatening but unable to break through until the late-game drama unfolded.

Key to Mountain View’s victory was goalkeeper Aiden Tassa, whose remarkable save in the 94th minute allowed the Spartans to maintain their momentum. “That save gave us the freedom to go for the win,” McGuirk added, emphasizing the importance of Tassa’s timely intervention.

Shafie’s emotional reaction echoed the sentiments of the entire team. “I still feel like I’m dreaming,” he said, reflecting on the joy of celebrating with teammates, family, and friends. “The whole team is such a good group. We love each other so much. It feels amazing. There’s no feeling like that.”

This victory also served as sweet revenge for Mountain View, who had previously lost to Alvarez in penalty kicks during last year’s semifinals. “It was a revenge game,” Shafie noted. “We wanted to win it so bad, because they’re the team that took it away from us last year. That’s what we were looking for, and that is what happened.”

As fans and players celebrate this triumphant moment in Mountain View’s history, the Spartans now look forward to their next challenges, having firmly established themselves as a powerhouse in high school soccer.
