Nissan Unveils Two New Sedans Amid Major Restructuring Efforts
UPDATE: Nissan has just unveiled two new sedans, the N6 and Teana, marking a significant pivot in its recovery plan amidst ongoing restructuring efforts, which include cutting 20,000 jobs and closing multiple factories. This double debut emphasizes Nissan’s commitment to the sedan market, particularly in China, where traditional sedans still resonate with consumers.
The N6, a plug-in hybrid developed in collaboration with the Dongfeng Nissan joint venture, boasts a powerful 1.5-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor powered by a 21.1-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, touted as the largest in its segment. Meanwhile, the Teana, designed entirely by Nissan, takes inspiration from the Altima while adopting a fresh design that evokes the elegance of the Peugeot 508.
Both sedans are set to launch in late 2023, with final technical specifications expected to be released in the coming weeks. Notably, the N6 measures 190.1 inches (4,831 millimeters) in length, slightly shorter than the Altima and Teana, and features a width of 74.2 inches (1,885 mm) and height of 58.7 inches (1,491 mm). This new offering aims to capture the attention of consumers who prefer sedans over the growing SUV trend.
Despite this promising launch, Nissan is reportedly discontinuing the U.S.-spec Altima after the 2026 model year, and the Versa will exit even sooner, in 2025. This positions the new Sentra as the sole representative of Nissan’s sedan lineup in North America, following the Maxima’s retirement.
The Teana, which appeared in Chinese regulatory filings earlier this year, will offer a base engine producing just 142 horsepower, a stark contrast to the more powerful turbocharged variant. While the N6 is likely to remain exclusive to China, the launch of these sedans signifies Nissan’s broader strategy to revitalize its brand and product offerings during a challenging time.
As Nissan navigates through these significant changes, the introduction of the N6 and Teana underscores the importance of sedans in the automotive market, particularly in regions where they continue to thrive. With production ramping up, Nissan aims to have both models available by the end of this year, further solidifying its commitment to innovation and consumer preferences in the automotive sector.
Stay tuned for full technical details as they are released, and watch for updates on Nissan’s restructuring efforts and how they will impact the company’s future in both domestic and international markets.
