Scientists Predict Round Trips to Mars and Venus by 2001
URGENT UPDATE: Two scientists have just revealed ambitious predictions about space travel, forecasting that by 2001, humans could embark on round trips to both Mars and Venus. The announcement, made during a symposium sponsored by the American Astronautical Society on March 15, 1966, has sparked excitement and debate over the potential costs of such journeys.
Dr. Eugene B. Konecci of the National Aeronautics and Space Council estimates that a round-trip ticket to Mars could cost approximately $6,400 for a 160-pound individual. During the symposium, which honors the legacy of the pioneering rocket scientist Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard, Konecci detailed his vision for affordable space travel. He stated, “We expect the cost of interplanetary transportation to drop to the order of $10 per pound by the turn of the century.” This means that food, oxygen, and other supplies would significantly impact the total fare.
Konecci explained that a one-way trip to Mars could cost $3,200, with the round-trip tally reaching $6,400. However, he acknowledged the uncertainties in current technology, stating, “Some of these systems are already here, such as life-support and propulsion systems.”
In contrast, Kuhrt envisions futuristic nuclear-powered spacecraft capable of making space travel more efficient. He proposed a 24-hour Earth-orbit trip for $1,250 and longer excursions, like trips to the Moon for $10,000 and journeys to Venus for $32,000. For those seeking quicker passage to Mars, he estimated a rapid trip could cost around $70,000.
