Two Fremont Men Arrested in Urgent Car Scam in Placer County
UPDATE: Two men from Fremont, California, have been arrested in connection with a fraudulent car scam that preyed on unsuspecting vehicle owners. 19-year-old Iulian Mihai and 36-year-old Decebal Mihai were taken into custody last week after a Newcastle resident reported suspicious activity during a car test drive.
Authorities launched an investigation following the car owner’s claim that the suspects tampered with the vehicle, causing it to smoke during the test drive. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office stated, “This well-known scam tricks victims into believing their vehicle has a catastrophic problem, allowing suspects to purchase the car at a significantly reduced price.”
The car owner, alarmed by the sudden malfunction, requested the suspects return another day. Instead, they contacted law enforcement, prompting an undercover operation that led to the men’s arrest during their return visit.
During the arrest, deputies discovered counterfeit documents and evidence linked to identity theft in the suspects’ vehicle. Further inquiries conducted by the Regional Auto Theft Task Force revealed that the 4Runner driven by the Mihais had been acquired through a similar scam in the Bay Area. The original owner had been deceived into selling her vehicle for less than 25% of its actual value.
Both men are now booked at South Placer Jail, facing serious charges including theft by false pretenses, conspiracy, possession of counterfeit registration, and identity theft. Each of these offenses could lead to felony convictions, as reported by the sheriff’s office.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office urges the public to exercise caution when engaging in transactions involving large items such as vehicles. “You’re always welcome to use the parking lot at any of our sheriff’s office locations for a safe exchange,” they advised.
As investigations continue, officials are calling on anyone who may have encountered similar scams to come forward. This urgent situation highlights the need for vigilance in vehicle sales, reminding potential buyers and sellers alike to be cautious and informed.
