Urgent: Over 80 Seniors Displaced in Southgate Assisted Living Fire

UPDATE: A major fire at the American House assisted living facility in Southgate, Michigan, has left over 80 senior citizens displaced, with the incident unfolding just after 10 p.m. Friday night. Residents were forced to evacuate, many with only the clothes on their backs, as flames engulfed the building.

Emergency responders confirmed that all residents and staff were accounted for, escaping without severe injuries. However, the emotional toll is significant. “They’re all elderly so they’re going to need a lot of help,” said Karen Richardson, whose aunt was among those displaced. She arrived at the scene shortly after the fire broke out and described the chaos as “seven or eight different fire trucks” battled flames shooting above the trees.

The fire’s rapid spread raised urgent challenges for evacuation, particularly due to the residents’ mobility issues. Joe Marsh, Southgate’s public safety director, noted the extra difficulties posed by some residents having memory care needs. “Challenges because of the mobility issues that we encounter from several of the residents,” he stated, highlighting the unique circumstances faced during the operation.

Volunteers played a crucial role in the evacuation efforts. “Citizen volunteers came in to assist us,” Marsh added, noting that even retired police officers helped transport residents to a temporary relocation center.

Among the displaced is Jodi Portice, whose father lost everything in the fire, including critical medication. She was able to replace some prescriptions through the VA in Ann Arbor. “Since all his meds were there, I was able to get everything,” she said, emphasizing the need for community support.

In response to the crisis, the Southgate Senior Center stepped in to collect donations for those affected. However, officials announced on Saturday afternoon that no further donations were needed, indicating a swift community response.

Despite the devastation, Richardson expressed gratitude for the safety of all involved. “Things can get replaced, people can’t,” she reflected, showcasing the resilience of the affected families as they navigate this challenging moment.
