Gunmen Kill Over 30 in Deadly Raid on Nigerian Village

At least 30 villagers have been killed and several others abducted following a violent raid by gunmen in the village of Kasuwan-Daji, located in Niger State, Nigeria. The attack occurred on the evening of Saturday, March 16, 2024, in the Borgu local government area, marking a continuation of the alarming trend of violence in the region, which has been plagued by insecurity and conflict.

According to Niger state police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun, the gunmen stormed the village and opened fire on the residents, leading to widespread panic and devastation. The attackers also set fire to the local market and several homes. While police reports confirmed a death toll of at least 30, residents expressed fears that the number could be significantly higher. Some eyewitnesses indicated that as many as 37 people might have died, with ongoing concerns about those who remain unaccounted for.

Local sources revealed that security forces have not yet arrived to assist the community, contradicting police claims of an active response to the situation. Rev. Fr. Stephen Kabirat, spokesperson for the Catholic Church of Kontagora Diocese, stated that the attackers killed more than 40 individuals, with some of the abducted victims being children. The fear among survivors has led many to refrain from retrieving the bodies, with one resident stating, “The bodies are there in Kasuwan-Daji village. If we don’t see any security, how can we go there?”

The attack on Kasuwan-Daji was not an isolated incident; local residents noted that the gunmen had been seen in nearby communities for about a week prior to the raid. This pattern of pre-attack surveillance is common among armed gangs operating in the region. The assault lasted for approximately three hours, during which the attackers inflicted terror and destruction on the village.

This incident echoes a similar kidnapping in November, when over 300 schoolchildren and their teachers were abducted from a Catholic school near the Papiri community, highlighting the ongoing struggle against insecurity in Nigeria. The police indicated that the attackers likely originated from the National Park Forest in the Kabe district, a known hideout for armed groups.

Such violent raids have become a frequent occurrence in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, where numerous gangs target vulnerable communities with little security presence. The situation has raised significant concerns about the effectiveness of local and national law enforcement agencies in protecting residents from these ruthless assaults.
