X Takes Action Against AI-Generated Misinformation Amid Iran Conflict

X, the social media platform, is implementing strict measures against accounts that disseminate artificial intelligence-generated content related to the ongoing conflict in Iran. This decision follows the widespread appearance of fabricated videos falsely depicting scenes from the war, including one viral clip claiming to show Tel Aviv under missile attack. Despite clear signs of manipulation, such as distorted solar panels in the footage, the video received over four million views, 35,000 likes, and was reposted approximately 8,000 times.

In a follow-up statement, the user who initially shared the misleading video acknowledged its AI origins. They noted, “After further verification, this footage appears to be AI-generated. I shared it because the scene reflects, painfully, what Gaza has endured under Israeli bombardment.” The user emphasized that, while the video itself may not be authentic, the emotional impact it conveys is rooted in the real experiences of those affected by the conflict.

X’s crackdown comes as part of a broader response to the increasing prevalence of misleading content online since the conflict began on March 9, 2024. The platform has warned users that accounts monetizing posts featuring such misleading content will face penalties.

New Measures for Creator Revenue Sharing

On March 10, 2024, Nikita Bier, X’s Head of Product, announced revisions to the platform’s creator revenue sharing policies. Bier stated, “During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people.”

Effective immediately, users who post AI-generated videos of armed conflicts without proper disclosure will be suspended from the creator revenue sharing program for a period of 90 days. Bier further noted that repeated violations could lead to a “permanent suspension” from this program, reinforcing X’s commitment to ensuring the platform remains a reliable source of information during critical events.

While the platform has clarified its stance on original content, it remains uncertain how X will monitor and penalize those who simply repost misleading videos. The challenge lies in determining whether users are aware that the content they share is deceptive.
