Vanderbilt University’s football team has earned the distinction of being named the Pop-Tarts Crazy Good Team of the Week following a significant victory over the No. 19 Tennessee Volunteers. The Football Writers Association of America and Florida Citrus Sports announced the honor after Vanderbilt triumphed with a decisive score of 45-24 at Neyland Stadium on Saturday.

This victory marked the 120th meeting between the two rivals, with Vanderbilt breaking a five-year drought in the series, as their last win against Tennessee was in 2018. The first half was tightly contested, with both teams entering halftime tied at 21. A pivotal moment occurred when Vanderbilt drew a roughing the passer penalty against Tennessee, allowing the Commodores to retain possession and score a touchdown just before the break.

Vanderbilt’s performance in the second half was particularly remarkable, as they outscored Tennessee 24-3. The Commodores made effective defensive adjustments and maintained an aggressive offensive strategy, culminating in a total of 582 yards gained throughout the game, including an impressive 314 rushing yards.

With this triumph, Vanderbilt not only solidified its standing but also recorded its tenth win of the season, achieving a program record of 10-2. This victory reinforces their position as they approach the College Football Playoff committee’s penultimate rankings, which are set to be released on Tuesday at 18:00 CT. As of last week, Vanderbilt was ranked No. 14 in the playoff standings, trailing teams such as Utah, Miami, and BYU. The challenge ahead lies in how many “style points” they accrued to potentially leapfrog those teams, especially with No. 10 Alabama serving as the current cut line.

In the event that Vanderbilt does not secure a playoff berth, their postseason fate will be determined when bowl game matchups are announced on Sunday afternoon.

Recognition for Key Players

Following their standout performance against Tennessee, two Vanderbilt players received individual honors. Running back Sedrick Alexander was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week for his exceptional outing, which included a career-high 115 rushing yards along with three touchdowns. His critical fumble recovery in the first quarter also helped sustain a key touchdown drive.

Offensive lineman Jordan White was recognized as the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week, achieving the highest performance grade according to Pro Football Focus among all Vanderbilt players in the game. His contributions, along with those of the offensive line, were instrumental in facilitating the Commodores’ impressive offensive display.

As Vanderbilt prepares for its next steps, the anticipation builds not only for the upcoming rankings but also for what lies ahead in their season trajectory.

The Commodores’ next challenge will unfold over the coming weeks, as they aim to build on this momentum and secure a strong position in the postseason landscape.
