Watsonville has appointed veteran police officer Brian Shab as its new chief of police, marking a significant transition for the city’s law enforcement. The announcement was made on Tuesday, with Shab expected to assume his new role in early 2024.

City Manager Tamara Vides praised Shab’s extensive law enforcement experience and leadership qualities, stating, “Chief Shab brings extensive experience in law enforcement and is a proven leader who has dedicated his career to public service.”

Shab’s background includes a notable tenure with the San Jose Police Department, where he has served since 1998. Prior to his law enforcement career, he served for eight years in the military. Throughout his time in San Jose, Shab has managed teams and led major divisions, earning multiple commendations such as the Medal of Valor and the Outstanding Police Duty Award.

In a statement regarding his appointment, Shab expressed his excitement and dedication to the role. “As a Santa Cruz County resident, Watsonville holds a special place in my heart,” he said. Shab holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice management from Union University and a Master of Science in law enforcement and public safety leadership from the University of San Diego. San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph acknowledged the impact Shab has had on the department, stating, “He will definitely be missed. But we’re excited for him and for the Watsonville department gaining such a strong chief.” Joseph highlighted Shab’s leadership as a contributing factor to the improvement of their operations.
