Consumers Urged to Buy Home Goods Before 2026 Price Hikes
Consumers are advised to purchase essential home goods before significant price increases are expected in early 2026. A report from Wells Fargo indicates that tariffs on imported goods will likely raise costs, impacting consumers directly. This warning comes as retailers have been managing prices over the holiday season, with many offering promotions and discounts to attract buyers.
According to Lauren Murphy, managing director of Wells Fargo Retail Finance, retailers have been strategic in their inventory management. In early 2025, many opted to front-load inventory purchases to avoid the anticipated impact of tariffs. Retailers increased their product stock by 14% from May to September. However, they are projected to see a 62% increase in inventory still in transit from overseas suppliers by early 2026. This surge in import costs is particularly concerning for home goods retailers, who depend heavily on imports and have less flexibility to absorb rising tariffs.
As a result, price hikes in the home goods sector are expected to occur more swiftly compared to other categories, such as apparel. Murphy highlighted that although apparel may also experience price increases, the lower base prices in that category may mitigate the overall impact. Conversely, a 10% increase on big-ticket items, such as furniture, could deter potential buyers due to the higher price points involved.
Murphy emphasized the importance of acting quickly for consumers considering major furniture purchases. She noted that buying now could lead to “significant savings before prices increase in early 2026.” Retailers seem aware of the looming price adjustments, as many have already begun to implement strategic price increases.
In summary, consumers are encouraged to be proactive and stock up on essential home goods as tariffs are expected to significantly affect prices in the near future. The advice from financial experts serves as a timely reminder for shoppers to make informed decisions ahead of the impending cost increases.
