Trader Joe’s has acquired a former Rite Aid location in Santa Monica, California, marking the grocery chain’s fourth store in the coastal city. The retailer purchased the property at 1331 Wilshire Blvd for $22 million, according to data from real estate provider CoStar. This acquisition aligns with Trader Joe’s ongoing expansion strategy, which has seen recent openings in various locations, including a new store in Costa Mesa earlier this month.

The former drug store occupies a substantial 17,800 square feet and offers 125 surface parking stalls, far exceeding the size of Trader Joe’s existing location at 2300 Wilshire Blvd, which is merely 2,130 square feet. The new site’s enhanced capacity may allow for a broader range of products, echoing the chain’s reputation for unique grocery items and frozen meals.

Trader Joe’s, which prides itself on being a “neighborhood grocery store,” has over 600 locations across the United States, with approximately 200 in California. The company has gained a loyal following for its distinctive offerings, such as Mandarin Orange Chicken and Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate.

While it remains uncertain whether both Santa Monica locations will operate simultaneously, there is a precedent in Los Angeles where two Trader Joe’s stores exist across the street from each other in Sherman Oaks. Initially, the plan was to close the older store once the new one opened, but the company ultimately decided to keep both locations running due to positive customer response.

As grocery retailers compete for consumers in Southern California and beyond, Trader Joe’s continues to adapt to the changing market dynamics. Rising inflation has pressured many Americans to seek out more affordable grocery options, prompting an increase in demand for budget-friendly stores.

Trader Joe’s, a privately held company, is owned by families who also have interests in the Aldi supermarket chain. The first Trader Joe’s store opened in Pasadena in 1967, and since then, the chain has cultivated a distinct brand that resonates with shoppers seeking value and quality.

The company has not yet disclosed an opening date for the new Santa Monica location, leaving many residents eager to learn more about this latest addition to their community. As the expansion progresses, Trader Joe’s is poised to further enhance its presence in a city that has already embraced its unique shopping experience.
