In a clear reflection of evolving consumer preferences, Gen Z is shaping fashion and technology trends as the new year begins. A recent survey conducted by Business Insider revealed that this generation has embraced a mix of millennial staples and contemporary brands, highlighting their evolving tastes and priorities.

One standout trend in footwear is the resurgence of short Ugg slippers, which have become a popular choice among Gen Z individuals. Members of this generation report that these slippers are not only stylish but also comfortable, making them an ideal choice for casual wear. According to the survey, six respondents indicated that Uggs are ubiquitous in their circles, with options like the $140 micro Uggs gaining particular attention.

Celebrity Skincare and Elevated Loungewear Capture Interest

Celebrity influence continues to resonate strongly with Gen Z, particularly in the realm of skincare. The skincare brand Rhode, founded by Hailey Bieber, emerged as a favorite among the respondents, with several mentioning their desire for products such as the $72 lip-tint set. Olivia Masullo, a 21-year-old public relations account coordinator, expressed enthusiasm for the brand’s aesthetic appeal, stating, “It is so aesthetically pleasing, and I’ve been wanting it for a while.”

Fashion trends also reflect a desire for comfort and style, with brands like Alo Yoga remaining popular. Mario Renzulli, an 18-year-old student and content creator, highlighted his Christmas gifts, which included a $74 Alo trucker hat and a $148 quarter zip, as essential closet staples. “Quarter zips were recently trending, which made me realize how they’re a good closet staple,” he explained.

Loungewear has not been overlooked either. Victoria’s Secret pajamas have gained traction, especially the iconic pink-and-white striped sets, which have caught the attention of many on social media. Masullo noted that these pajamas unexpectedly became one of her favorite holiday gifts.

The Tech Essentials and Luxury Purchases of Gen Z

As technology continues to advance, Gen Z remains keen on the latest gadgets. This holiday season, many sought after the newest offerings from Apple, specifically the $1,099 iPhone 17 Pro and the $799 iPhone 17. Georgia Gay, a 19-year-old public relations student, shared her excitement about receiving the standard model, noting its design and functionality.

Gen Z is also willing to invest in luxury items for themselves. Vince Do, a 27-year-old content creator, chose to gift himself a $7,750 Santos de Cartier watch to commemorate his achievements in 2025, including purchasing his first home. Similarly, Lindy Osborn utilized cash gifts to acquire an $599 iPad Air 11, demonstrating a trend of self-purchasing among young consumers.

As Gen Z continues to impact consumer behaviour, their preferences for brands, styles, and technology will likely shape the retail landscape in the coming years. The insights gained from this survey not only highlight current trends but also hint at the potential direction of fashion and technology as we move further into 2026.
