Japan’s Golden Bears Dazzle at Rose Parade, Donate for Fire Victims

The Mino Jiyu Gakuen Golden Bears marching band and cheer squad from Toyonaka, Japan, captivated audiences at the 137th Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Their performance was particularly poignant as they had previously donated $7,000 to aid victims of the Eaton and Palisades fires, which moved Tournament of Roses President Mark Leavens and his wife, Kay, deeply.

During their celebrated appearance on January 1, 2026, the Golden Bears showcased their talent and dedication, making a strong impression despite adverse weather conditions. Band members and cheerleaders creatively incorporated the American flag into their routine, using white stars and stripes while performing pieces like “Smile” and “We’re All in This Together” from Disney’s “High School Musical.”

Outstanding Performance in Challenging Weather

Facing rain on parade day, the Golden Bears took extra precautions to protect their instruments, wrapping clarinets in plastic to ensure they could deliver their best. Earlier performances during the Bandfest on December 31, 2025, allowed them to shine without the threat of rain, highlighting their status as one of the top five marching bands in Japan, according to the Tournament of Roses.

The distance traveled for this event was remarkable; the Golden Bears journeyed 5,253 miles to reach Pasadena, earning the title of the band that traveled the furthest to participate. This dedication not only reflects their commitment to performance but also their strong connection to community service back home.

Leavens noted the significance of their charitable contribution, stating it was inspiring to see the school community supporting those in need while preparing for their own international trip.
