American Airlines Pursues Investment in Azul Following United’s Deal
American Airlines is reportedly advancing towards a significant investment in Brazilian carrier Azul Linhas Aereas, following United Airlines’ recent approval to increase its stake in Azul. United has received clearance from Brazilian regulators to inject $100 million into Azul as part of the airline’s Chapter 11 restructuring efforts. This strategic move comes as Azul seeks to strengthen its financial standing after declaring bankruptcy in May 2025.
As the third-largest domestic carrier in Brazil and the second-largest international airline, Azul was founded in 2008 by David Neeleman, who is also known for establishing WestJet, JetBlue, and Breeze Airways. The airline has built its reputation on a unique business model that connects smaller cities, thereby stimulating demand through competitive pricing.
Investment Landscape Shifts with United Airlines
According to insights from Simple Flying, United Airlines’ investment of $100 million opens the door for American Airlines to pursue a similar financial commitment. Both airlines had previously agreed to collectively invest up to $300 million in Azul, which has faced significant financial challenges in recent years. While United’s partnership with Azul dates back over a decade, American’s involvement is more complex due to its established relationship with Brazilian airline GOL, which Azul once considered merging with.
For Azul, raising funds is critical to enhancing liquidity and significantly reducing its estimated $2 billion debt. The airline aims to achieve this through both investments from airline partners and a public equity offering projected at approximately $650 million.
Strengthening US-Brazil Aviation Ties
The ongoing investments reflect the growing importance of the US-Brazil aviation market. United Airlines has been a minority investor in Azul since 2015, and their relationship includes a codeshare agreement that facilitates seamless travel for passengers. Azul also has arrangements with JetBlue, further expanding its reach in the US market. The United States stands as the largest market for Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, which supplies many regional jets to US carriers, making a strong foothold in Brazil valuable for American airlines.
In the competitive landscape of South American aviation, American and United’s investments in Azul are particularly significant, especially as rival Delta Air Lines operates a joint venture with LATAM, the largest airline in Brazil and South America.
Azul’s business strategy revolves around servicing low-demand routes with minimal competition, steering clear of major urban centers like São Paulo. Instead, the airline focuses on cities such as Belo Horizonte, Campinas, and Recife, thereby capturing demand through convenient non-stop flights at lower prices.
Despite its innovative approach, Azul has faced financial hurdles, including currency fluctuations, pandemic-related debts, and rising operational costs. The carrier currently operates a fleet of 173 aircraft, including models from Airbus and Embraer, underscoring its capacity to serve diverse routes.
With expectations that Azul will emerge from bankruptcy restructuring by February 2026, the airline seeks to return to a more sustainable financial footing. The backing from American and United could play a pivotal role in reshaping its future and enhancing its competitive landscape in Brazil’s aviation market.
