Penn State Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer Set to Join Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Hokies are expected to welcome quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer as he prepares to transfer from Penn State. According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Grunkemeyer, who recently completed a redshirt freshman season, is set to commit to the Hokies, bolstering their roster as they navigate the transfer portal.

Grunkemeyer showcased his potential during his time with the Nittany Lions, completing over 69% of his passes for a total of 1,339 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions. His journey began in earnest after stepping in for injured starter Drew Allar in October. Initially, his performance was modest, with a completion rate of 64.4% across his first three games, resulting in 457 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions. In his last four games, Grunkemeyer demonstrated remarkable improvement, completing 73.8% of his passes for 777 yards and six touchdown passes without any interceptions. His overall performance earned him a grade of 68.2 from Pro Football Focus (PFF), with a passing grade of 68.4 and a rushing grade of 63.4.

Grunkemeyer excelled particularly in the intermediate game, completing 62% of his passes from 10 to 19 yards downfield, averaging 15.2 yards per attempt and achieving an impressive PFF grade of 83.0 for those attempts. He thrived when operating in a clean pocket, achieving a grade of 79.0, but his performance declined under pressure, where he received a score of 49.3. Throughout his time at Penn State, Grunkemeyer faced pressure on approximately 35% of his snaps, underscoring the importance of solidifying Virginia Tech’s offensive line to support him.

Ranked as the No. 11 quarterback in the transfer portal and a top 40 prospect overall, Grunkemeyer still has three years of eligibility remaining. Out of high school, he earned the distinction of being the No. 105 player in his class and the No. 7 quarterback, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
