The Rebels, now under the leadership of interim head coach Pete Golding, are just two victories away from securing the national championship title. In a press conference on Tuesday, quarterbacks coach Joe Judge described the team’s preparations as “chaotic,” drawing an unexpected comparison to former NFL player Aaron Hernandez, with whom he had a brief connection during his time with the New England Patriots. Hernandez was infamously cut from the team following legal troubles that led to his conviction for murder in 2015. Judge remarked, “My next-door neighbor was Aaron Hernandez. This is still more chaotic,” highlighting the unusual circumstances surrounding the team during this crucial time.

With Kiffin’s departure, Golding has taken charge while some of Kiffin’s former staff remain for the playoff run. Judge emphasized the importance of focusing on the players and ensuring they receive the necessary information ahead of the game. “We’ve kind of doubled up in the rooms so that if they were not to come back, we still had coaches working specifically [with that position],” Judge explained. He also noted that Charlie Weis Jr., the offensive coordinator, is prepared to call plays for the game, allowing the team to maintain continuity despite the coaching shakeup.

Golding addressed the current coaching situation during the press conference, stating that the coaching staff has the autonomy to make decisions about their roles amid the transition. “They have every opportunity like they have up to this point to be able to make that decision,” he said. He acknowledged that balancing responsibilities with new jobs can be challenging but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to succeed regardless of the circumstances.

The Rebels are set to face Carson Beck and the Hurricanes, who are also vying for a championship berth. The stakes could not be higher, as the winner of this semifinal will advance to play for the national championship against either a team from Indiana or Oregon.
