Rochester, Minnesota, is experiencing a burst of color and creativity thanks to local window artist Todd Robinson. His eye-catching designs have transformed the storefronts of various businesses, including the Canadian Honker, Hy-Vee in Barlow Plaza, and Refashion Consignment. Robinson’s artwork features celebratory themes that aim to spread joy throughout the community.

Having relocated to Rochester in 2024 with his wife to be closer to family, Robinson brings a rich background in art and performance. Before moving, he was a well-known figure in San Antonio, Texas, where he began making a name for himself as a self-taught artist. His artistic journey is deeply rooted in his early days in southern California, where he developed a passion for creativity that extended to hip-hop dancing. Robinson even performed at the famous Palladium in Los Angeles and appeared on the television program “Soul Train.”

His transition from dancing to window painting was a natural progression. After working in the oil fields in Texas, he decided to channel his creativity into painting, quickly gaining a following. Now in Rochester, Robinson expresses his appreciation for the community, noting, “I like the people here. They greet you with a smile. Rochester has a good vibe.”

Despite the warm reception, Robinson acknowledges that the local weather can be a challenge, occasionally hindering his painting schedule. When asked about his style, he emphasizes the importance of dressing well. “When your dress is appropriate and you look nice, people see you that way,” he explains.

His winter attire focuses on warmth but remains stylish. “I wouldn’t want anyone painting outside of my business who didn’t look nice,” Robinson adds. He wears a coat that features “Todd’s Window Art” and chooses colors that reflect the season, opting for red around Valentine’s Day and green for St. Patrick’s Day.

Beyond his work wardrobe, Robinson enjoys sporting Addidas and Nike sweatsuits, often choosing custom outfits that are unique. “A lot of what I like to wear today came out of my hip-hop days,” he shares, highlighting how sponsorships for dance competitions influenced his fashion sense.

His background in dance also plays a role in his artistic expression. “Back when I was dancing, there was a lot of competition. Eventually, other dancers didn’t want to compete against me because I had gotten good,” Robinson recalls. He transitioned his talents from dancing to art, incorporating airbrushing into his creations.

Robinson has even painted custom outfits for himself, including a themed jeans ensemble for Halloween, which he wore while trick-or-treating with his grandchildren. His footwear choices reflect his artistic flair, often wearing nice tennis shoes for painting and opting for Air Jordans in his everyday life.

Accessories are also a key component of Robinson’s style. He enjoys wearing hats that complement his outfits and has a penchant for jewelry, including gold chains and earrings. “I guess that’s a California thing I never let go of,” he admits.

When reflecting on his influence as a parent and grandparent, Robinson hopes to impart the lesson that personal style leaves a lasting impression. “How you dress is how people will remember you after you’ve passed away. You want to dress your best,” he concludes.

Robinson’s vibrant contributions to Rochester extend beyond window art. His presence in the community reflects a blend of creativity, style, and an understanding of how personal expression shapes perception. As he continues to paint the town, Rochester residents can expect to see more of his joyful artistry in the months to come.
