The cast and crew of Grey’s Anatomy are grieving the loss of actor Eric Dane, who passed away at the age of 53. His family confirmed that Dane died on February 19, 2025, after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In a heartfelt statement, they revealed that he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, including his wife and two daughters, Billie and Georgia.

Dane’s family expressed their deep sorrow, stating, “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.” They also acknowledged the support from his fans, requesting privacy during this challenging time.

Legacy in Television and Advocacy

Before his passing, Dane gained widespread recognition for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” on ABC‘s Grey’s Anatomy. He was part of the show from 2006 until 2012 and made a surprise return in 2021. Following his time on the medical drama, he starred in HBO‘s Euphoria, portraying the father of Jacob Elordi’s character.

In a statement made in April 2025, Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis just before filming for the third season of Euphoria began. He expressed gratitude for his family, stating, “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” At the time, he also shared his determination to keep working, saying he looked forward to returning to set.

Despite the challenges posed by the disease, Dane candidly reflected on his feelings during an interview on Good Morning America in June 2025. He expressed anger about the possibility of not being there for his daughters, stating, “All I want is to just spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can.”

Dane credited his neurologist, Dr. Merit Cudkowicz, for instilling hope about managing the disease’s progression. He remarked on his unexpected resilience, saying, “My attitude and spirit have been pretty buoyant. I am just kind of riding it. Not every day has been great, but the net is, I have a pretty good life.”

Heartfelt Tributes from Co-Stars

Following the news of his passing, several cast members from Grey’s Anatomy shared their tributes on social media. Kevin McKidd, who has portrayed Dr. Owen Hunt since 2008, posted a touching image of Dane as McSteamy on his Instagram Stories, captioning it, “Rest in peace buddy.”

Similarly, Sarah Drew, known for her role as Dr. April Kepner, echoed McKidd’s sentiments by resharing the same image and adding, “Rest in peace,” accompanied by three crying emojis.

Former showrunner Krista Vernoff also paid tribute by sharing a text exchange with Dane. She recalled reaching out to him about returning for a dream sequence in the show’s 17th season, noting his willingness to break the rules for a hug on set. “The thing I will remember most about Eric Dane are his hugs. The best hugs,” she wrote.

As friends and fans reflect on Dane’s contributions to television and his advocacy for ALS awareness, his legacy as an actor and a devoted family man will undoubtedly endure.
