Austin’s Pickleball Obsession Takes Center Stage in New Mockumentary

A new mockumentary titled Pickleheads, which humorously captures Austin’s growing obsession with pickleball, premiered at the Austin Film Festival in the fall of 2025. Directed by Josh Flanagan and written by and starring Jared Bonner, the film will have its Los Angeles debut on March 1 at the TCL Chinese Theatre.

The film follows the story of disgraced ping pong champion Barney “The Butcher” Bardot, portrayed by Bonner. After experiencing a spectacular downfall marked by a shocking betrayal on the court and personal tragedy, Barney retreats from public life for nearly a decade. He reflects, “Everyone says trust your gut. But what happens when your gut betrays that trust? It murders your mom.” This darkly comedic premise sets the tone for a film that embraces absurdity.

Barney’s path to redemption leads him to the vibrant world of pickleball, a sport that has rapidly gained popularity in Austin. His brother takes on the task of documenting Barney’s comeback, turning it into a film project that intertwines their personal lives with the sport’s cultural phenomenon.

The cast of Pickleheads features a mix of familiar faces, including Harvey Guillén, known for his role in What We Do in the Shadows, as a memorable debt collector. John O’Hurley, famous for his portrayal of J. Peterman in Seinfeld, makes a cameo as himself, adding a layer of authenticity to the mockumentary’s sports media setting. The ensemble also includes Kristine Froseth, Pej Vahdat, Adrianne Palicki, Eric Nelsen, Ryan Cooper, and Lindsey Morgan.

Bonner, who moved to Austin four years ago, draws inspiration from his own experiences with the sport. After completing his previous mockumentary, Dance Dads, he began playing pickleball obsessively. “I just went out to the park and played with strangers every day,” Bonner recalls. “I wanted to capture the boom of a grassroots sport.”

The film showcases the quirky and competitive spirit of backyard tournaments and neighborhood rivalries. One recurring joke involves tennis players attempting to infiltrate pickleball courts, highlighting the playful tension between the two sports. Filmed over 12 days in and around Austin, Pickleheads features iconic local sights, including the 360 Bridge and the distinctive Texas landscape, such as an armadillo sanctuary.

Bonner emphasizes the role of improvisation in shaping the film’s lively tone. “There’s so much freedom compared to ‘stand in this light and deliver the line,’” he explains. The result is a whimsical comedy filled with deadpan interviews, rivalry melodrama, and unexpected plot twists, including a hostage subplot and a climactic pickleball tournament.

Despite its comedic nature, Bonner aims for the film to resonate on a deeper level. With minimal profanity and a broad comedic style, Pickleheads seeks to foster inclusion, reflecting the sport’s welcoming environment. “I really want to bring in everybody to just laugh at a movie,” he states. “There’s too much dividing us.”

The film’s premiere at the Austin Film Festival received an enthusiastic response, with Bonner describing the atmosphere as “electric,” filled with “laughter every seven seconds.” Currently, the production team is pursuing distribution opportunities, aiming for a release on a major streaming platform later this year. Bonner also hints at the possibility of hosting a pickleball-themed viewing party in Austin to celebrate the film’s launch.
