Trump Critiques Khamenei’s Son Amid Speculation of Power Shift

Former President Donald Trump has publicly criticized the potential rise of Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to a position of power within Iran. Speaking with Axios on Thursday, Trump dismissed Mojtaba as a “lightweight,” expressing skepticism about his ability to lead the country effectively.

Reports from Iranian opposition outlets suggest that Mojtaba Khamenei is being considered as a successor to his father, who was killed in a recent US-Israeli strike alongside over 40 top Iranian officials. Yet, Trump has made it clear he believes the younger Khamenei is not up to the task. “They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” he stated, indicating a desire for a leader who could foster stability in the region.

Mojtaba Khamenei, aged 56, has faced scrutiny concerning his personal life, particularly regarding his reported struggles with impotence. According to leaked US diplomatic cables published by WikiLeaks, he underwent treatment in London on four separate occasions to address these issues. The cables reveal that following his marriage, he was unable to consummate the union, which led to significant pressure from his family to produce children quickly. After a lengthy stay in a UK clinic, he eventually did become a father.

In an unusual aspect of Iranian law, Mojtaba also engaged in two temporary marriages, which allowed him to have intimate relations outside of wedlock without losing his religious standing. These arrangements were reportedly intended to prepare him for his eventual marriage, during which he did manage to have a child with his wife.

The Islamic Republic is currently navigating a power vacuum following the death of its key leaders, with Mojtaba emerging as a front-runner among hardliners advocating for his ascension to the role of supreme leader. This move could be seen as an effort to demonstrate to Western nations that the regime remains committed to its existing policies, despite the upheaval.

Trump further asserted that he should be consulted regarding any leadership transitions in Iran, drawing a parallel to his involvement in Venezuelan politics. “I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela,” he noted, referencing the newly installed president following the capture of Nicolas Maduro by US forces in January.
