UPDATE: In an electrifying showdown, Pacific Union eighth-grader Jon W. Ford has clinched victory at the Paulette Gilliam Humboldt County Spelling Bee on March 5, 2023, by correctly spelling the winning word, effraction, which means “the act of making forcible entry.” This triumph secures him a coveted spot at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., from May 26-28, 2023.

Twelve talented students from across Humboldt County gathered at the Sequoia Conference Center for this year’s competition, showcasing their spelling prowess. Michael Davies-Hughes, the Humboldt County Superintendent of Schools, expressed pride in the students’ achievements. “Watching these students spell words most adults wouldn’t even attempt was both impressive and a little humbling,” he stated.

After an intense five rounds of competition, Jon emerged as the champion, earning not only pride but also a chance to win $40,000 at the national competition. “On behalf of Pacific Union Elementary School, we would like to congratulate Jon W. Ford, Humboldt County’s Spelling Bee Champion!” exclaimed principal Mathew Bigham. He highlighted Jon’s dedication, stating, “We couldn’t be more excited to watch him compete for the top prize — representing both his school and his county.”

The event also saw Cayana Kohndrow from Cuddeback School take second place, while Michael Glines from Ferndale Elementary School secured third. The Humboldt County Office of Education praised the support from volunteers who made the event possible, including Spelling Bee Coordinator Nanette Voss and pronouncer Bill Funkhouser.

Coast Central Credit Union co-sponsored the Spelling Bee and provided a travel scholarship for Jon and his family, ensuring they can participate in the national event.

This remarkable achievement not only highlights Jon’s hard work but also serves as an inspiration for students in Humboldt County. As the countdown to the Scripps National Spelling Bee begins, the community rallies behind Jon, eager to see him shine on a national stage.
