BREAKING: No. 6 Iowa State has officially clinched the No. 5 seed for the upcoming Big 12 Tournament with a decisive 86-65 victory over Arizona State. The Cyclones showcased a powerful performance, especially in the second half, as they prepare to head to Kansas City for their first match on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. local time.

Head Coach T.J. Otzelberger expressed pride in his team’s effort, saying, “The effort in the second half defensively, flying around, generating turnovers and scoring off of defense.” The Cyclones’ win not only secures their tournament position but also marks a significant moment for key players on senior day.

The standout trio of Cyclones—senior forward Joshua Jefferson, senior guard Tamin Lipsey, and junior forward Milan Momcilovic—each contributed 16 points to the scoreboard. Jefferson, who was recently named to the Wooden Award National Ballot Top 15, also added seven rebounds and three assists. He reflected on his time at Iowa State, stating, “Coming back to Iowa State was the best decision in my life.”

Despite a strong start from the Sun Devils, who led early in the game, Iowa State flipped the momentum with a series of three-pointers and a thrilling fast-break dunk from Jamarion Batemon. An unexpected technical foul against Arizona State’s head coach Bobby Hurley added to the Cyclones’ advantage, as Momcilovic capitalized by sinking both technical free throws.

The second half saw Iowa State unleash a staggering 24-0 run, turning a tight game into a commanding lead. Tensions escalated when freshman center Massamba Diop received a technical foul following an altercation, further shifting the game’s dynamics. Otzelberger seized the opportunity to honor his seniors, allowing them to share the court one last time as the crowd of 14,267 erupted in applause.

Besides the big three, freshmen Dominykas Pleta and Batemon provided crucial support, with Pleta grabbing team-high offensive rebounds and scoring 11 points. Otzelberger praised Pleta’s impact, stating, “I thought Pleta had one of his best games and we needed it.”

As the Cyclones prepare for the Big 12 Tournament, fans are eager to see how this momentum will carry them forward. With the tournament rapidly approaching, Iowa State’s performance today has set the stage for what promises to be an exciting postseason.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Cyclones aim to make a deep run in the tournament.
