Watsco Reports Mixed Q3 Performance Amid Market Challenges
Qualivian Investment Partners, an investment partnership focused on long-only public equities, disclosed its performance results in its Q3 2025 investor letter, released recently. The letter revealed that the fund outperformed the iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF (QUAL) by a substantial margin, achieving returns of 69.2% on a gross basis and 61.3% on a net basis since inception through September 30, 2025. Additionally, it surpassed the S&P 500 by 32.7% gross and 26.1% net.
Among the companies highlighted in the letter was Watsco, Inc. (NYSE:WSO), a major distributor of air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment. Watsco’s performance in the third quarter of 2025 was mixed, as described in Qualivian’s correspondence. The company reported a 1.01% return over the past month, but its shares have declined by 29.63% over the last year. As of December 23, 2025, Watsco’s stock closed at $345.76 per share, with a market capitalization of $14.062 billion.
In the investor letter, Qualivian outlined Watsco’s challenges, noting that the company missed analysts’ expectations for both revenue and earnings per share (EPS), which fell by 4% and 6% year-over-year, respectively. These declines were attributed to difficult market conditions and lower equipment unit volumes. Despite these setbacks, Watsco achieved a record gross profit margin of 27.5% due to effective pricing strategies and recorded an operating cash flow of $355 million, while maintaining a debt-free balance sheet.
Management expressed optimism about future performance, indicating that the significant one-time costs associated with the industry’s transition to complex A2L refrigerants are largely behind them. This shift is expected to lead to efficiency improvements in 2026. Furthermore, Watsco plans to host an Investor Day on December 13, 2025, to discuss key initiatives aimed at reaccelerating growth in the coming year.
Despite its potential, Watsco, Inc. is not included in the list of the 30 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. According to Qualivian’s database, 34 hedge fund portfolios held Watsco shares as of the end of the third quarter, consistent with the previous quarter. While the risks associated with Watsco are acknowledged, the fund’s management believes that investments in artificial intelligence stocks present more promising returns in a shorter timeframe.
Investors seeking alternative opportunities may find insights in Qualivian’s report detailing AI stocks with potential upside. For further information, the hedge fund investor letters for Q3 2025 can be accessed for additional perspectives from various leading investors.
In summary, Watsco’s recent quarter reflects both challenges and opportunities, as the company navigates a complex market landscape while looking ahead to potential growth strategies.
