Beloved Teacher James “Jim” Danielson Passes Away at 77
James “Jim” Gregory Danielson, a cherished educator from Vacaville, passed away on December 1, 2025, at the age of 77. He spent his final moments at home, surrounded by his loving wife, Dianne Danielson, and daughter, Kailyn Danielson, after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Born on May 15, 1948, to Jean (nee Mangles) and Edgar Danielson, Jim was a descendant of early settlers in Suisun Valley. The family initially lived in Vallejo before moving to Fairfield, and ultimately to Jean’s childhood home on the Mangles’ ranch. Jim’s early career began at just ten years old, working alongside his father in a fuel delivery business. He enjoyed a vibrant childhood filled with cycling, exploring orchards, and discovering treasures in the dirt.
After graduating from Chico State with a teaching credential, Jim returned to the Solano area to launch his career. He became known as “Mr. D.” to students and colleagues during his time as an elementary school teacher at Elmira Elementary and Callison Elementary. Jim was well-loved for his engaging teaching style, which included activities like “silent ball” and “the map game.” He was known for his creativity, exemplified by an entire Oregon Trail scene he built for open house events. He also handwrote all his class worksheets, showcasing his impeccable penmanship.
In a delightful twist of fate, Jim met his future wife, Dianne Cretcher, who was also a teacher. The couple enjoyed a fulfilling 38-year marriage, co-teaching in Jim’s classroom for three years after Dianne’s retirement. Their shared love of the outdoors led them to explore the redwoods together, while Dianne introduced Jim to the ocean. Their vacations often included hiking in lush forests, picnicking on beaches, and savoring wine in the Napa and Suisun valleys.
Jim was known for his thoughtful gestures, keeping a stock of jewelry in his sock drawer to ensure he never missed an occasion to surprise Dianne with gifts. His affection was further expressed through bouquets of flowers that accompanied each present.
As a father, Jim was deeply devoted. He spent hours teaching Kailyn how to blend colors in her coloring books, attended numerous dance recitals, and penned handwritten letters after she moved out. He was a man of quiet humility, preferring not to be the center of attention, yet his playful spirit shone through in his jokes and warm bear hugs.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, sister Laurie Bailey, and sister-in-law Gloria Pickering. He is survived by Dianne, Kailyn, son Greg Heinze (partner Steven), sister Kathy Sbaffi (husband Dave), brother-in-law Bill Cretcher (wife Tilly), and many nieces and nephews. His absence will be felt deeply, and his memory cherished by all who knew him.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on January 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Village 360 in Suisun Valley. All are invited to attend. Those interested in joining the memorial are encouraged to text (707) 689-7134 for more details.
In memory of James Gregory Danielson, contributions may be made in the form of flowers or living memorials.
